Ages 14 – 18
Enrollment is now open for the Fall and Spring Semester of 2019 – 2020
Application Deadline: Friday, August 23
The newest program in Signature’s ever-expanding educational programming, the Signature Conservatory is a weekly session for the region’s strongest teenage actors to gather together to work on making the move from being good actors to great actors. The studio setting provides a chance for young actors to hone their skills outside of the pressures of the rehearsal room, to work with Signature’s acclaimed staff and affiliated theater artists, and to find connections with other young actors across the DMV area.
The Signature Conservatory is only for the serious acting student.
The Signature Conservatory’s curriculum is tailored toward the needs of the students participating in the program. Students can expect a healthy and challenging mix of exercises introducing them to a wide variety of acting techniques. Students can also expect college audition preparation, monologues, scripted and improvised scene work. As each semester progresses, the collective group will grow together in all aspects of acting, becoming a true ensemble in the process.
There’s no beating around the bush here – participation in the Signature Conservatory is a huge time commitment. That being said, we have intentionally given regular weeks off to provide you with opportunities to catch up with your life. Additionally, students are allowed two absences per semester.
Classes begin at 7PM at Signature Theatre.

Members of the Signature Conservatory are allowed two absences per semester. All absences must be requested in advance through Signature’s Education team. Students who miss more than two absences in a given semester will be required to reapply for the next semester. An excess of absences may result in dismissal from the program. Students who do not exceed the allotted number of absences and have no behavioral issues will be invited to participate in the program the following year without having to apply again.
Signature Mainstage Productions
Students participating in the Signature Conservatory are expected to see all of Signature’s main stage productions during the semesters they are participating in. Students will be able to see productions for free by attending invited dress rehearsals. If students are unable to attend dress rehearsals, other arrangements will be made between the student and Signature Education for seeing productions.
Tuition is $325 per semester. Scholarships for discounted or free tuition are available each semester to highly committed and qualified students for whom paying for the full cost of the program is not an option. When applying, students are welcome to apply for one or both semesters. Students are encouraged but not required to participate in each semester. Tuition is non-refundable.
Students who wish to be a part of the Signature Conservatory may apply by writing and submitting a 2-3 page essay answering the following questions:
- Tell us about your acting experience – training, productions, etc.
- What, in your opinion, is good acting?
- What do you hope to gain from participating in this program?
- Are you interested in participating in the fall semester, the spring semester or the full year?
- For those interested in scholarships: What specific special circumstances/financial challenges merit your consideration for scholarship support?
Additionally, students must submit a video of a 1-minute monologue. We encourage submitting videos by uploading them on YouTube. Be sure to upload them as “Unlisted” rather than “Private” as video submissions may be viewed by several Signature staff members.
To submit your materials, send them to email@example.com. Applications must include both the essay and video audition. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
For participation in Fall Semester or both Fall and Spring Semester, submissions are due by August 23, 2019 (pending space availability).
For participation in Spring Semester only, submissions are due by January 10, 2020 (pending space availability).
A maximum number of 20 participants will be accepted in the program. Enrollment is now open.
