Development Communications Coordinator

Signature Theatre is seeking a Development Communications Manager. The Manager oversees a comprehensive communications project portfolio for the Development department and represents a unique opportunity for a manager level position to play a key role with multiple departments in achieving theatre-wide communications goals with multiple constituencies. This position is integral to Signature’s effort to cultivate, inspire, solicit, and steward contributed revenue for the institution, across diverse stakeholders. The Manager is responsible for collaboratively developing and implementing communications for the development department, supervising projects, creating content, streamlining activities, and establishing and upholding consistent editorial standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the Director of Institutional Giving, the Director of Individual Giving, and the Director of Advancement and Planning, coordinate the overall development communications portfolio for organizational initiatives, priorities, and campaigns.
  • Create content (i.e., writer, editor) for development communications, including grant writing and institutional giving collateral, direct mail or other letters, email, blog posts, social media campaigns, and other projects. Deliverables include grant and sponsorship proposals and reports; fundraising collateral materials; program descriptions; executive remarks; video scripts; and other projects as needed.
  • Oversee and manage development communications content generated by other departments, as appropriate, including projects related to donor stewardship and engagement. Liaise with appropriate staff colleagues on projects.
  • Create content for select institution-wide communications projects that are related to philanthropy or intended for donors. Deliverables may include articles, speeches, web content, brochures, or other projects that describe programs, performances, events, artists, festivals, or initiatives.
  • Liaise with the Signature administrative leadership, artistic leadership, and other department leadership and staff on project development, research, data collection, and analysis.
  • Review and edit development communications and institution-wide communications to ensure accurate and appropriate messaging to and for the donor constituency.
  • Attend and assist with development-related events throughout the year including some evenings and weekends.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Reporting Relationships
This role reports to Deputy Director; Institutional Giving and works directly with the Deputy Director; Institutional Giving and the Deputy Director; Individual Giving and collaborates with the Director of Advancement and Planning, the Development team, the Marketing team and Senior Staff. Other contacts include donors, donor prospects, community members, board trustees, artists and staff.

Qualifications

  • Exceptional writing ability; proven ability to articulate complex concepts in written form to multiple audiences through various vehicles; experience in writing to represent an institution preferred; experience in editing the work of other professional writers preferred.
  • One to three years’ experience in proposal writing or fundraising preferred.
  • Strong project management, research, analysis, and oral communications skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Adobe, and donor databases.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with development colleagues to create a results-driven, team-oriented environment.

Compensation and Benefits
The Development Communications Manager position offers an annual salary of $45,000 and an excellent package of benefits, including medical, dental, disability and life insurance; paid vacation, sick and parental leave; as well as complimentary and discount tickets. Signature Theatre is also a qualifying employer for the Public Student Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF). This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position at 40 hours per week. This position is based at Signature Theatre’s administrative offices in Arlington, VA, with the possibility for a hybrid in person/remote schedule.

House Manager

Signature Theatre, a Tony Award®-winning, non-profit professional theater, in Arlington, Virginia seeks a part-time House Manager. House Managers are responsible for providing a high standard of guest service to achieve and maintain customer loyalty from both subscribers and single ticket buyers, maximize revenue for the Signature Shop, and directly supervise members of the Signature Ushers and Volunteers. House Managers report to the Guest Services Manager. House Managers are expected to provide the best patron experience possible at mainstage Signature productions, cabarets, and other events throughout the year.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide a high level of guest services dealing with all comments, complaints, and points raised by the public in Front of House areas and following up these points by immediate action or in consultation.
  • Responsible for the safety of the audience, in case of an emergency and take the proper steps to either evacuate or secure the audience members. Handling all emergency situations in a calm and instructive manner.
  • Maintains ticket-scanning equipment, hearing impaired devices, and walkie-talkies for communicating with stage manager.
  • Maintain the Signature Theatre Shop, including inventory checks and daily reconciliation.
  • Work in conjunction with the Stage Manager to coordinate performance timelines, including preshow chat, curtain speeches, and intermission.
  • Maintain all front of house areas, including lobbies, theatre spaces, Shop and Coat Check.
  • Set-up and restore the house prior to and after each performance.
  • Serve as an active member of the Front of House department and support the Guest Services Manager and Guest Services Coordinator in upkeep of the department by attending Team Meetings, assisting with Volunteer Trainings, and completing other assigned special projects.
  • Directly supervise members of the Signature Usher & Volunteer Corps while on duty.
  • Work proactively to anticipate the needs of patrons and Signature Theatre.
  • Write and distribute performance reports & accident reports.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned by the Guest Services Manager, Guest Services Coordinator, or other Signature Management on Duty.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required. Secondary Education preferred.
  • Previous experience working live events and/or customer service role.
  • Have strong interpersonal skills and able to provide excellent customer service and hospitality.
  • Team player who can work well in a fast-paced environment.
  • First Aid/CPR certified within 6 months of hiring.
  • Available to work 20 hours per week.

Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time, walk long distances, and climb up/downstairs.
  • The employee is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or sit and must lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.

Compensation
The House Manager position is a part-time, hourly non-exempt job with an hourly rate of $19/hr.

Usher

Signature Theatre, a Tony Award®-winning, non-profit professional theater, in Arlington, Virginia is seeking part-time Ushers to join our Front of House Team. Ushers are responsible for providing a high standard of guest service to achieve and maintain customer loyalty from both subscribers and single ticket buyers, maximize revenue for the Signature Shop, and ensure the safety of Patrons and Artists. Ushers report to the Front of House Operations Manager and House Manager on Duty. Ushers are expected to facilitate the best patron experience possible at mainstage Signature productions, cabarets, and other events throughout the year.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Meet and greet all patrons entering Signature’s Max or Ark Theatre, checking, or scanning for valid tickets.
  • Be personal and pro-active in aiding all guests with the highest level of customer service and hospitality.
  • Assist guests by providing accurate directions to seating sections within the theatres.
  • Receive and quickly act upon requests or complaints from patrons; refer serious problems to the House Manager on Duty.
  • Retain knowledge of the Signature Theatre’s history, staff, and emergency activity procedures.
  • Enforce Signatures policies, rules, and Equity regulations.
  • Aid the House Manager on duty to patrons in the event of an accident or injury.
  • In the event of an emergency, assist in evacuating Signature Theatre, while maintaining a calm, professional demeanor.
  • Perform additional functions and activities as directed by the House Manager on Duty or Front of House Operations Manager.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Other customer service helpful but not required. Training will be provided.
  • Have strong interpersonal skills and able to provide excellent customer service and hospitality.
  • Must be a team player who is able to work well in a fast-paced environment.
  • Available to work 20 hours per week.

Teaching Artists

Signature Theatre’s Education Department is conducting an ongoing search for skilled part-time teaching artists for school partnerships, workshops and residencies.

Selected teaching artists will be kept in Signature Education’s teaching artist database and contacted when school partnerships require their specific talents in the classroom. Signature Education is looking for teaching artists with experience teaching acting, directing, voice, dance, playwrighting, technical theatre and theatrical design to middle school and high school students. The need for teaching artists is ongoing and this is a rolling application process.

Basic Duties / Requirements:

  • Teaching artists create, oversee and supervise workshops, residencies and lessons as a Signature representative at partnering schools and organizations. Signature Teaching Artists are expected to be supportive, respectful and encouraging toward all students and classroom teachers. While Signature Education will generally not write lesson plans for Teaching Artists, artists will collaborate with Signature representatives, students, school representatives to create lesson plans and materials
  • Teaching artists should know that they may teach anywhere within the DMV area and that they will be responsible for handling their own transportation to each school they’re assigned to. Should a workshop present itself that takes place online, teaching artists are requested to run the session with a strong connection to the internet.
  • In addition to teaching experience, experience working professionally in theatre is preferred.
  • Signature Theatre teaching artists work with diverse student populations and experience levels. Applicants with experience working with diverse populations, including but not limited to non-English, multilingual, neurodiverse, or disabled students are encouraged to apply.
