Assistant Technical Director

Position Purpose and Objectives
Under the direction of the Technical Director (TD), the Assistant Technical Director (ATD) serves as a key member of the Production Department Staff. The ATD will assist in planning and delivery of scenic elements for all company productions; supervise the scene shop staff; assist in managing the construction, installation, and strike of all scenic elements in coordination with the other production departments.

Essential Job Functions

  • Lead the Scene Shop staff in the construction, load in, and load out of scenery.
  • Using AutoCAD, make and assist the technical director in making mechanical and working drawings. Complete most drafting in 3D.
  • Assist in the design of all scenic systems and oversee their construction and installation, helping ensure proper functioning and safety of all moving scenic elements.
  • Hire and maintain scene shop staff at the direction of the Technical Director.
  • Train new shop staff in proper safety procedures, use of tools and equipment, and in company standards.
  • Track departmental and show spending and submit weekly reconciliation forms.
  • Ensure that all hourly employees complete accurate time sheets on a weekly basis.
  • Assist the Deck Chief in maintenance and upkeep of productions and their artistic and technical values.
  • Collaborate with other department heads, including the Scenic Charge and Deck Chief to ensure the successful completion of each show.
  • Maintain a scene shop culture that promotes safety, curiosity, and collaboration.
  • Assist in the upkeep of the scene shop and scenic equipment, including tool maintenance, shop organization, and stock management.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Working Requirements

  • Employee must be able to lift 50 pounds unaided and in repetition.
  • Employee may be required to occasionally work in extreme conditions: at heights, in confined spaces, and in adverse weather.
  • Employee must maintain a safe and orderly working environment.
  • Employee must maintain a valid driver’s license.

Compensation
This is a full-time, exempt position starting at $50,000 annually, commensurate with experience, eligible for Signature’s offering of excellent benefits including medical, dental, and life insurance; vacation, sick, and personal leave; and complimentary/discounted tickets. Master Carpenter

Position Purpose and Objectives
Under the direction of the Assistant Technical Director and Technical Director, the Master Carpenter serves as a key member of the Production Department Staff. The Master Carpenter leads shop staff in the construction and loading/unloading of all scenic elements and assists the Assistant Technical Director in supervising the shop floor.

Essential Job Functions

  • Assist the Assistant Technical Director in leading the overhire shop staff in the construction, load in, and load out of scenery.
  • Oversee and direct the overhire shop staff in specific projects. Ensure that overhire are accurately executing scenic designs.
  • Provide instruction and guidance to shop staff on wood working and metal working techniques, and on scenic carpentry best-practices.
  • Handle high detail projects at the direction of the Technical Director and Assistant Technical Director.
  • Keep the scene shop clean and orderly, assist the Deck Chief in keeping the stage house in a similar state.
  • Assist the Deck Chief in maintenance and upkeep of productions and their artistic and technical values.
  • Welding Experience is strongly preferred.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Assistant Sound Designer

Signature Theatre, a Tony Award-Winning LORT B theatre, seeks an Assistant Sound Designer to assist with engineering, speaker hang, orchestra pit install, loud speaker management systems, network routing/management, ClearCom, Qlab, DiGiCo, and wireless body mics/frequency coordination. The key dates for the production below. Dates may be flexible depending on availability.

Essential Job Functions

  • Assist Resident Sound Designer with load-in and technical rehearsals of the production.
  • Assist to supervise the installation of all sound, orchestral, and backstage communication systems.
  • Assist the Resident Sound Designer with communication to the rest of the Production and Artistic teams on the production, including Stage Management and other designers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Strong background in sound engineering and design for Theatre.
  • Experience with theatrical sound systems and equipment including wireless (RF) microphones, frequency coordination software, mixing consoles (both analog and digital), amplifiers and processing equipment.
  • Knowledge of theatrical software such as Qlab and Dante is preferred.
  • A basic understanding of loudspeaker installation and rigging.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and comfortable working at heights.

Working Requirements

Cook

Signature Theatre, a Tony Award®-winning, non-profit professional theater, in Arlington, Virginia seeks a part-time Cook for Ali’s Bar, located inside Signature Theatre. The Cook will prep ingredients, prepare existing menu items from recipes, and know the safe and proper methods of food preparation and operation of different kitchen appliances and utensils. The Cook will also provide input to the Head Chef and Food and Beverage Manager in dish creation and basic kitchen maintenance and cleaning.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Preopening kitchen prep work – including meis-en-place, pre shift inventory and cleaning.
  • Preparing menu items and plating according to recipes and/or direction of the Head Chef.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and compliance with food sanitation requirements by properly handling food and ensuring correct storage.
  • Assisting Head Chef in taking weekly inventory to ensure the kitchen is well-stocked.
  • Adhering to all food safety and quality regulations.
  • Maintaining a clean working space by removing trash, and washing plates, utensils, and equipment.

Qualifications

  • Have or obtain a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) certificate.
  • Availability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Basic math and computer skills. Experience in POS system Toast preferred.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong task and time management abilities.
  • Eye for detail and experience in various cooking methods and procedures.
  • Understanding of food service health and safety.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, etc for extended periods, and lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Previous experience in Bar and Restaurant a plus.
  • Bilingual Spanish and English a plus.

Compensation

Carpenter – Overhire

The Tony Award-winning Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA and of the DC metro area, is seeking Overhire Scenic for our current season. Successful candidates will work under the supervision of the Technical Director and Asst. Technical Director, building and installing scenery for various shows in the season.

Position requires knowledge of theatrical stage carpentry. Must be able to work some weekends, climb ladders and lift 50 -75 pounds over your head. Competitive salary and benefits for qualified candidates. Position available immediately.

Starting Rate is $20/hour and is overtime eligible.

Usher

Signature Theatre, a Tony Award®-winning, non-profit professional theater, in Arlington, Virginia is seeking part-time Ushers to join our Front of House Team. Ushers are responsible for providing a high standard of guest service to achieve and maintain customer loyalty from both subscribers and single ticket buyers, maximize revenue for the Signature Shop, and ensure the safety of Patrons and Artists. Ushers report to the Front of House Operations Manager and House Manager on Duty. Ushers are expected to facilitate the best patron experience possible at mainstage Signature productions, cabarets, and other events throughout the year.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Meet and greet all patrons entering Signature’s Max or Ark Theatre, checking, or scanning for valid tickets.
  • Be personal and pro-active in aiding all guests with the highest level of customer service and hospitality.
  • Assist guests by providing accurate directions to seating sections within the theatres.
  • Receive and quickly act upon requests or complaints from patrons; refer serious problems to the House Manager on Duty.
  • Retain knowledge of the Signature Theatre’s history, staff, and emergency activity procedures.
  • Enforce Signatures policies, rules, and Equity regulations.
  • Aid the House Manager on duty to patrons in the event of an accident or injury.
  • In the event of an emergency, assist in evacuating Signature Theatre, while maintaining a calm, professional demeanor.
  • Perform additional functions and activities as directed by the House Manager on Duty or Front of House Operations Manager.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Other customer service helpful but not required. Training will be provided.
  • Have strong interpersonal skills and able to provide excellent customer service and hospitality.
  • Must be a team player who is able to work well in a fast-paced environment.
  • Available to work 20 hours per week.

Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time, walk long distances, and climb up/downstairs.

Food Expeditor and Dishwasher

Signature Theatre, a Tony Award®-winning, non-profit professional theater, in Arlington, Virginia seeks a part-time Food Expeditor and Dishwasher, to assist a busy kitchen at Ali’s Bar, located inside Signature Theatre.

The Food Expeditor and Dish Washer will be responsible for maintaining the flow of orders from the bar to the kitchen to the diners, ensuring orders are completed quickly and correctly, assisting with the finishing touches on dishes, and conducting quality control on each dish and delivering food to either bartender or to diners at their tables. This position will also be responsible for busing and sanitizing dining tables, collecting utensils and properly cleaning and restocking supplies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Informing the bartenders when certain dishes or ingredients have run out and passing food requests from the bartenders to the kitchen.
  • Ensuring that all orders are completed in time and with the correct priority.
  • Inspecting the cleanliness, presentation, and temperature of completed dishes.
  • Performing the finishing touches to completed dishes, such as adding garnishes and removing smudges.
  • Keeping the cooking, storage, and prep areas clean, neat, and well-stocked.
  • Ensuring all staff adheres to health and safety standards.
  • Collecting and cleaning used dining ware from the dining area, bar and kitchen. Cleaning and sanitizing tables and surfaces.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age

Teaching Artists

Signature Theatre’s Education Department is conducting an ongoing search for skilled part-time teaching artists for school partnerships, workshops and residencies.

Selected teaching artists will be kept in Signature Education’s teaching artist database and contacted when school partnerships require their specific talents in the classroom. Signature Education is looking for teaching artists with experience teaching acting, directing, voice, dance, playwrighting, technical theatre and theatrical design to middle school and high school students. The need for teaching artists is ongoing and this is a rolling application process.

Basic Duties / Requirements:

  • Teaching artists create, oversee and supervise workshops, residencies and lessons as a Signature representative at partnering schools and organizations. Signature Teaching Artists are expected to be supportive, respectful and encouraging toward all students and classroom teachers. While Signature Education will generally not write lesson plans for Teaching Artists, artists will collaborate with Signature representatives, students, school representatives to create lesson plans and materials
  • Teaching artists should know that they may teach anywhere within the DMV area and that they will be responsible for handling their own transportation to each school they’re assigned to. Should a workshop present itself that takes place online, teaching artists are requested to run the session with a strong connection to the internet.
  • In addition to teaching experience, experience working professionally in theatre is preferred.
  • Signature Theatre teaching artists work with diverse student populations and experience levels. Applicants with experience working with diverse populations, including but not limited to non-English, multilingual, neurodiverse, or disabled students are encouraged to apply.
