Resident Sound Designer

Signature Theatre, a Tony-award winning LORT B theater in the Washington DC metro area, seeks an experienced designer and engineer to lead its Sound Department. Signature produces eight mainstage productions each season in two flexible-seating black box spaces: the 275 seat MAX Theatre and the 112 seat ARK. Signature Theatre also produces a series of cabarets, a student production through our education department, and a series of readings and workshops of new works.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design sound for company productions as assigned by the Production Manager.
  • Plan all backstage communication systems.
  • Supervise the sound staff in the construction, load in, maintenance, and load out of all sound, orchestral, and backstage communication equipment for all company productions.
  • Coordinate schedules with the Production Manager and other production departments.
  • Work with Production Manager to generate show specific and departmental budgets.
  • Design all sound rigging systems. Ensure proper functioning and safety of all sound elements.
  • Coordinate with other departments on any elements that share responsibilities, such as units with speakers built into them.
  • Hire, support, and dismiss sound staff as needed.
  • Develop and update long range plans for improvement and expansion of sound, orchestral, and communication inventories and theatre equipment and systems.

Qualifications

Qualified applicants will have a broad background in sound reinforcement, wireless frequency coordination, digital mixing consoles, audio communication and monitor systems, and maintenance of theatrical audio equipment; a proven track record as a manager, with experience coordinating overhire staffing; excellent problem solving and communication skills; and be a strong collaborator. Commitment to leading with Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility principles. Experience with overhead rigging, Digico consoles, QLab software, and Dante networking preferred. Should be able to lift 75 pounds unaided and in repetition and be comfortable working at height and in confined spaces.

Compensation

The Resident Sound Designer position is a full-time, salaried position that will require some work on nights and weekends, particularly during technical rehearsals and previews.

Development Communications Manager

The Development Communications Manager manages a comprehensive communications project portfolio for the Development department. This position is integral to Signature’s effort to cultivate, inspire, solicit, and steward contributed revenue for the institution, across all constituencies. The Manager is responsible for collaboratively developing and implementing development strategies, supervising projects, creating content, streamlining activities, and establishing and upholding consistent editorial standards.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the Director of Advancement and Planning, and the fundraising team, develop an overall strategic development communications portfolio for organizational initiatives, priorities, and campaigns.
  • Act as a primary content creator (i.e., writer, editor) for development communications, including: institutional giving and grant writing, capital campaign projects, individual giving including direct mail, email and social media campaigns, and other projects. Deliverables include: annual impact reports; campaign collateral; case statements; grant and gift proposals; sponsorship proposals; donor profiles; program descriptions; executive remarks; video scripts; and other projects.
  • Establish and maintain strategic alignment, consistent standards, efficiency, accuracy, and timeliness across all development communications projects.
  • Foster strategic communications alignment interdepartmentally across the organization, to ensure appropriate and effective messaging to the donor constituency.
  • Manage and supervise development communications content generated by other staff, as appropriate, including projects related to donor stewardship and engagement. Liaise with appropriate Marketing and Artistic staff colleagues on projects.
  • Manage information about institutional priorities, plans, and programs for the Development office, to facilitate the effective and efficient delivery of development communications. This includes gathering and arranging such information into clear, strategic, and effective messages.
  • Create content for select institution-wide communications projects that are related to philanthropy or intended for donors. Deliverables may include: articles, speeches, web content, brochures or other projects about programs, performances, events, artists, festivals, or initiatives.
  • Liaise with the Signature administrative leadership, creative leadership, interdepartmental staff on project development, research, and analysis.
  • Develop and maintain institutional communication portfolio, including key information about institutional priorities, plans, and programs, and share information about its contents with front-line fundraisers and other staff.
  • Review and edit development communications and institution-wide communications to ensure accurate and appropriate messaging to and for the donor constituency.
  • Attend and assist with development-related events throughout the year including some evenings and weekends.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Reporting Relationships

Reports to Director of Advancement and Planning and collaborates with other Signature Senior Staff, and all the Development team. Other contacts include: donors, donor prospects, board trustees, artists, and staff.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Exceptional writing ability; proven ability to articulate complex concepts in written form to multiple audiences through various vehicles; experience in writing to represent an institution preferred; experience in editing the work of other professional writers preferred.
  • Three to five years’ experience in development or related field; some experience focused on development communications preferred; experience in preparing and managing complex communications projects preferred.
  • Strong project management, research, analysis, and oral communications skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Adobe, and donor databases.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with development colleagues to create a results-driven, team-oriented environment.

Compensation

The Development Communications Manager position offers an annual salary in the low $50s and an excellent package of benefits, including medical, dental, disability and life insurance; paid vacation, sick and parental leave; as well as complimentary and discount tickets. Development Manager

Signature Theatre, a Tony Award-winning LORT B theater, is currently seeking a Development Manager to support the Development team in meeting Signature Theatre’s fundraising goals. The Manager is primarily responsible for the data, gift entry and acknowledgment process. This role also supports the team in special events, stewardship, solicitation, and other activities. This position is based at Signature Theatre’s administrative offices in Arlington, VA, with flexibility for a hybrid in-person/remote schedule.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Data and Gift Entry
• Processes all gifts in our Tessitura database, submits information to the business office, sets up and processes payment plans and matching gifts, oversees acknowledgment process, including timely processing of donor letters, cards, receipts, and gift reminders
• Creates and distributes tracking reports and distribution lists
• Works with the Finance and IT Department to reconcile to the general ledger donor accounts and works to streamline processes
• Responsible for maintaining donor preferences, event usage, and recognition data in donor database, serves as one of the department’s “Power Users.”
• Works with appropriate staff to initiate queries from the donor database, as needed

Administrative Support
• Manages the expense budget for all development programs
• Maintains donor files, checking all recent correspondence and liaison for volunteer help
• Assists in planning and executing of special event logistics including event follow-up
• Coordinates with Donor Services Manager for all donor recognition listings including show programs, donor walls and Signature website
• Assist in the integration of prospect management files (i.e. profiles, call reports) into the donor database, and with the maintenance of the donor/prospect hard files
• Maintain inventories of all Annual Fund materials
• Answers donor and ticketing inquiries as needed
• Works closely with the development team to execute donor meetings by collecting materials and enclosures
• Serves as Development office representative at fundraising and special events, both during office hours and after hours, providing assistance as directed
• Serves as liaison to marketing department for various duties, including donor emails and invitations using Wordfly and Tessitura

Production Manager

Signature produces eight mainstage productions each season in two flexible-seating black box spaces: the 275 seat MAX Theatre and the 112 seat ARK. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise the production departments in the planning, construction, and maintenance of the physical production for all shows.
  • Coordinate schedules with Department Heads (Scenic, Costumes, Props, Lights, Sound, Stage Management) for the successful rehearsal, build, load-in, tech, and performance of company productions, events, new media productions, and Education performances.
  • Work with the General Manager to generate show specific and departmental budgets. Collaborate with Department Heads and creative teams to bring designs within budgetary and safety constraints. Track departmental spending and work with General Manager to generate periodic reprojections of annual budget and cash flow models.
  • Ensure successful flow of information between Departments on any elements that share responsibilities, such as practicals in scenery, flow items, and any special effects.
  • Promote and maintain a culture of safety and responsible work environment.
  • Supervise Department Heads and Associate Production Manager and oversee Department Heads’ management of their staff.
  • Approve weekly payroll for Artistic and Production employees.
  • Develop and update long range plans for improvement and expansion of theatre equipment and systems.
  • Oversee the maintenance and upkeep of productions and their artistic and technical values.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

A minimum of five (5) years production management experience or its equivalent, preferably at a regional theater. Proven technical abilities, including experience working on musical productions and world premieres. Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, with guest artists and colleagues. Impeccable organizational skills and the ability to direct and motivate staff effectively. Comfort with Microsoft Office programs and aptitude for adopting new software tools. Understanding of advanced scheduling, budgeting and bookkeeping practices. Ability to manage and prioritize among multiple projects simultaneously and drive to meet deadlines. Commitment to leading with Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility principles.

The Technical Director is responsible for all aspects of planning and executing scenery for company productions, participates in the design and engineering of new seating configurations for the theaters, and works closely with the Production Manager in budgeting and planning scenery needs for the season.

Qualifications
Qualified applicants will possess a diverse background in scenic construction, engineering, overhead rigging, and automation; excellent problem solving and communication skills; proficiency with Autocad and Creative Conners systems; and be a strong collaborator. Bartender

Signature Theatre, a Tony Award®-winning, non-profit professional theater, in Arlington, Virginia seeks experienced bartenders for Ali’s Bar, located inside Signature Theatre.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Welcoming customers, determining customer beverage preferences, making recommendations, taking drink and food orders
  • Answering basic inquiries about the current shows such as length, intermission time and basic content warnings.
  • Working directly with other Front of House staff including House Managers and Box Office Associates to ensure a pleasant experience for guests.
  • Informing customers about new beverages and specials.
  • Selecting and mixing ingredients, garnishing glasses, and serving beverages to customers.
  • Checking identification to ensure customers are the legal age to purchase alcohol.

Food Expeditor and Dishwasher

Signature Theatre, a Tony Award®-winning, non-profit professional theater, in Arlington, Virginia seeks a part-time Food Expeditor and Dishwasher, to assist a busy kitchen at Ali’s Bar, located inside Signature Theatre.

The Food Expeditor and Dish Washer will be responsible for maintaining the flow of orders from the bar to the kitchen to the diners, ensuring orders are completed quickly and correctly, assisting with the finishing touches on dishes, and conducting quality control on each dish and delivering food to either bartender or to diners at their tables. This position will also be responsible for busing and sanitizing dining tables, collecting utensils and properly cleaning and restocking supplies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Informing the bartenders when certain dishes or ingredients have run out and passing food requests from the bartenders to the kitchen.
  • Ensuring that all orders are completed in time and with the correct priority.
  • Inspecting the cleanliness, presentation, and temperature of completed dishes.
  • Performing the finishing touches to completed dishes, such as adding garnishes and removing smudges.
  • Keeping the cooking, storage, and prep areas clean, neat, and well-stocked.
  • Ensuring all staff adheres to health and safety standards.
  • Collecting and cleaning used dining ware from the dining area, bar and kitchen. Cleaning and sanitizing tables and surfaces.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Availability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

Teaching Artists

Signature Theatre’s Education Department is conducting an ongoing search for skilled part-time teaching artists for school partnerships, workshops and residencies.

Selected teaching artists will be kept in Signature Education’s teaching artist database and contacted when school partnerships require their specific talents in the classroom. Signature Education is looking for teaching artists with experience teaching acting, directing, voice, dance, playwrighting, technical theatre and theatrical design to middle school and high school students. The need for teaching artists is ongoing and this is a rolling application process.

Basic Duties / Requirements:

  • Teaching artists create, oversee and supervise workshops, residencies and lessons as a Signature representative at partnering schools and organizations. Signature Teaching Artists are expected to be supportive, respectful and encouraging toward all students and classroom teachers. While Signature Education will generally not write lesson plans for Teaching Artists, artists will collaborate with Signature representatives, students, school representatives to create lesson plans and materials
  • Teaching artists should know that they may teach anywhere within the DMV area and that they will be responsible for handling their own transportation to each school they’re assigned to. Should a workshop present itself that takes place online, teaching artists are requested to run the session with a strong connection to the internet.
  • In addition to teaching experience, experience working professionally in theatre is preferred.
  • Signature Theatre teaching artists work with diverse student populations and experience levels. Applicants with experience working with diverse populations, including but not limited to non-English, multilingual, neurodiverse, or disabled students are encouraged to apply.
