Signature Theatre seeks a Marketing Associate to join our team who is an outstanding project manager, an excellent communicator, and is interested in all aspects of marketing and communications from publications to social media, graphic identity, publicity, content and experiential marketing. A passion for learning new skills is essential, as well as is the ability to positively work with many different personalities. This early career position works closely with all members of Signature’s marketing team and reports to the Director of Marketing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Artist Information: Responsible for requesting, collating, editing and maintaining a database of bios and headshots for artists and other creative team members working at Signature.
  • Signature’s website:
    • Upload and organize photos in Signature’s website image hosting service.
    • Enter artists bios and headshots to Signature’s website.
    • Update website with press quotes and social media posts.
    • Assist Deputy Director, Digital Media with website text and image updates.
  • Other websites:
    • theatreWashington main contact: Upload all Signature shows, events, education programs and available jobs to theatreWashington’s Website; Helen Hayes awards, providing all information and communications needed.
    • Destination DC: Upload all Signature shows to Events DC website.
    • Add Signature shows and events to various other websites/databases.
  • Press/Media Responsibilities:
    • Assist in writing press releases.
    • Ensure media contact list is up to date regularly. Find and update list new contacts, clear out old contacts.
    • Upload materials to online press kits for media and send photos, credits, and other materials reporters’ request.
    • Add press releases to email system and make edits.
    • Archive all Signature press clips and create media packets for each production.
    • Assist with press nights as needed.
  • Media:
    • Organize and archive properly all Signature’s show photos and marketing videos, in coordination with other marketing staff and Signature’s IT department.
    • Assist with creating and editing captions for Signature videos
  • Write copy for small marketing/PR communications pieces, possibly update basic design elements.
  • Attend marketing meetings and contribute ideas for various campaigns.
  • Attending meetings with other departments as needed.
  • Work at Signature events and festivals in rotation with other staff.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Marketing.

Qualifications

  • Ability to accurately track, prioritize and perform multiple tasks.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work positively with multiple stakeholders both inside and outside of the organization.
  • Willingness to jump into new tasks as assigned.
  • Basic marketing principles from previous marketing job experience or coursework (including internships).
  • Bachelor’s Degree or related work experience.

Compensation

The Marketing Associate position is an entry level position and offers a salary in the low $30s and an excellent package of benefits, including medical, dental, disability and life insurance; paid vacation, sick and parental leave; as well as complimentary and discount tickets. This is a full-time, salaried exempt position – 40 hours per week, including some weekends and evenings. When Signature marketing staff return to the offices full time, this will be an on-site position with the possibility of telework 1-2 days a week.

New Position: Director of Artistic Development

Signature Theatre, Arlington, Virginia’s Tony Award Winning Regional Theatre, seeks a Director of Artistic Development. A member of Signature’s Senior Staff, the Director of Artistic Development will work alongside Signature’s Artistic Director and Associate Artistic Director to create and oversee a thoughtful and robust new work commissioning and development program and oversee Signature’s existing new work development programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The job will be tailored to the individual hired, but key responsibilities will likely include:

  • Developing a pipeline of potential projects, and running submission processes for all development programs
  • Playing a leading role in season planning: identifying and proposing new musicals and plays for the season and developing projects for future seasons
  • Working with Artistic Director to create, plan and implement a robust and meaningful musical commissioning and development program with a commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility
  • Overseeing and maintaining relationships with commissioned writers, ensuring agreements and timelines are met, and providing dramaturgical feedback throughout the development process
  • Establishing new work submission protocols; overseeing, reading and evaluating all new scripts being submitted to Signature, and maintaining a record which details the status of all the work that has been submitted to Signature
  • Seeking out opportunities to partner with other theaters, new work development programs, commercial and independent producers, etc. to co-commission and co-develop new work, or to create new models of partnership
  • Overseeing Signature’s Monday Night New Play Reading Series, which features the work of DC-area playwrights
  • Overseeing Signature Theatre/Yale University Partnership, which offers career-building opportunities for promising young composers
  • Building and maintaining strong industry relationships with both known and emerging playwrights and composers, as well as literary agents
  • Recommending artists to the Artistic Director for consideration for commissions
  • Coordinating casting for developmental work, alongside Signature’s Casting Director
  • Facilitating talkbacks and other Education events as required
  • Providing artistic content for grant proposals
  • Working with Managing Director and Production Manager on contracting artists as necessary
  • Serving as senior staff member at the Theatre, collaborating closely in planning, budgeting, and strategy with other department heads
  • Participate in short-term and long-term institutional planning
  • Collaborating with all departments in the furtherance of Signature’s goal of being an anti-racist theater
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Artistic Director

Qualifications
Creative producers, dramaturges, and other theater artists are encouraged to apply for this position. We expect a candidate will have:

  • A degree in theater or equivalent professional experience
  • Significant experience as a working artist or producer at professional theaters
  • Robust knowledge of known and emerging playwrights and composers and strong existing contacts and relationships
  • In-depth experience working on new musical and play development with established & emerging writers, composers
  • Strong curatorial and communication skills
  • Experience managing people and collaborating across disciplines
  • Ability to manage and prioritize among multiple projects simultaneously and drive to meet deadlines

Associate Artistic Director

Tony Award winner Signature Theatre, widely known for its innovative productions of new and reimagined musicals and plays, seeks a new Associate Artistic Director. A member of Signature’s Senior Staff, the Associate Artistic Director will work alongside Signature’s Artistic Director and Director of Artistic Development to deliver an exciting season of programming and manage the day-to-day artistic operations of a busy theater. They will be a key voice in season planning and community engagement and will be an ambassador for the Theatre and our work both locally and nationally.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The job will be tailored to the individual hired, but key responsibilities will likely include:

  • Directing productions, readings, workshops, concerts and/or cabarets, if appropriate to candidate’s experience and interests
  • Playing a leading role in season planning: reading and recommending musicals and plays for the season and developing projects for future seasons
  • Acting as Line Producer for assigned mainstage productions and cabarets, including attending casting sessions, production meetings, technical rehearsals, previews, and other production related events
  • Building and maintaining strong industry relationships with both known and emerging playwrights and composers, as well as literary agents
  • Working with Artistic Director and visiting directors to assemble production creative teams
  • Envisioning and implement community engagement initiatives that expand the work of Signature’s mission beyond the mainstage in conjunction with marketing and education teams
  • Creating and directing artistic content in conjunction with the marketing, education, and development teams
  • Producing ancillary programming as appropriate (including pre-show events, artist conversations, Signature Show segments, etc.)
  • Producing Signature’s Annual Open House, a day-long event at the beginning of every season with 25 free performances throughout the building and more than 80 artists performing and leading discussions or master classes throughout the day
  • Representing the Theatre and our mission at industry and public events
  • Maintaining a network of professional connections, particularly in the DC area
  • Teaching as needed for Signature’s Education Programs
  • Serving as senior staff member at the Theatre, collaborating closely in planning, budgeting, and strategy with other department heads
  • Participating in short-term and long-term institutional planning

Usher (Part-Time)

Signature Theatre, a Tony Award®-winning, non-profit professional theater, in Arlington, Virginia is seeking part-time Ushers to join our Front of House Team. Ushers are responsible for providing a high standard of guest service to achieve and maintain customer loyalty from both subscribers and single ticket buyers, maximize revenue for the Signature Shop, and ensure the safety of Patrons and Artists. Ushers report to the Front of House Operations Manager and House Manager on Duty. Ushers are expected to facilitate the best patron experience possible at mainstage Signature productions, cabarets, and other events throughout the year.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Meet and greet all patrons entering Signature’s Max or Ark Theatre, checking, or scanning for valid tickets.
  • Be personal and pro-active in aiding all guests with the highest level of customer service and hospitality.
  • Assist guests by providing accurate directions to seating sections within the theatres.
  • Receive and quickly act upon requests or complaints from patrons; refer serious problems to the House Manager on Duty.
  • Retain knowledge of the Signature Theatre’s history, staff, and emergency activity procedures.
  • Enforce Signatures policies, rules, and Equity regulations.
  • Aid the House Manager on duty to patrons in the event of an accident or injury.
  • In the event of an emergency, assist in evacuating Signature Theatre, while maintaining a calm, professional demeanor.
  • Perform additional functions and activities as directed by the House Manager on Duty or Front of House Operations Manager.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Other customer service helpful but not required. Training will be provided.
  • Have strong interpersonal skills and able to provide excellent customer service and hospitality.
  • Must be a team player who is able to work well in a fast-paced environment.
  • Available to work 20 hours per week.

Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time, walk long distances, and climb up/downstairs.
  • The employee is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or sit and must lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.

Compensation

The Usher position is a part-time, hourly non-exempt job with an hourly rate of $13.00/hr.

Teaching Artists

Signature Theatre’s Education Department seeks skilled part-time teaching artists for school partnerships, workshops and residencies. Selected teaching artists will be kept in Signature Education’s teaching artist database and contacted when school partnerships or Signature Education programming require their specific talents in the classroom. Signature Education is looking for teaching artists with experience teaching acting, directing, voice, dance, playwrighting, technical theatre and theatrical design to middle school and high school students. Teaching opportunities are available at schools around the DMV area, virtually, and onsite at Signature Theatre.

Basic Duties / Requirements:

  • Teaching artists create, oversee and supervise workshops, residencies and lessons as a Signature representative at partnering schools and organizations. Signature Teaching Artists are expected to be supportive, respectful and encouraging toward all students and classroom teachers. While Signature Education will generally not write lesson plans for Teaching Artists, artists will collaborate with Signature representatives, students, school representatives to create lesson plans and materials
  • Teaching artists should know that they may teach anywhere within the DMV area and that they will be responsible for handling their own transportation to each school they’re assigned to. Should a workshop present itself that takes place online, teaching artists are requested to run the session with a strong connection to the internet.
  • In addition to teaching experience, experience working professionally in theatre is preferred.
  • Proof of completed COVID-19 vaccination required for any in-person teaching.
  • Signature Theatre teaching artists work with diverse student populations and experience levels. Applicants with experience working with diverse populations, including but not limited to non-English, multilingual, neurodiverse, or disabled students are encouraged to apply.
