Technical Director
Signature Theatre continues to enhance its scene shop and theatrical systems and is currently seeking an experienced Technical Director who will play a pivotal role in the Theatre’s long-term growth. The Technical Director (TD) serves as a Department Head member within the Production Department Staff. They supervise a team of approximately 10-15 union and non-union scene shop staff members. The TD plans and delivers scenic elements for approximately 6-8 full-scale company productions and other one-off stage productions while managing scenic production budgets and resources. The TD reports to the Production Manager, collaborates with designers to manage scope and artistic vision and coordinates with other Production departments to manage the physical construction, installation, and strike of all scenic elements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise scene shop staff in the construction, installation, and strike of scenery.
- Produce and coordinate load-in schedules.
- Determine material & labor costs of designs and ensure they can be implemented safely within the necessary timeline. When necessary, work with the Production Manager to bring scenic designs within budget.
- Track departmental spending.
- Manage and supervise creation of mechanical & working drawings and 3D models from which the scene shop staff can build scenic elements.
- Produce and manage safe installation of rigging systems, including creation of a detailed rigging plan to be collaborated on with other Production departments.
- Produce and manage safe installation of automation systems, primarily with Creative Conners equipment.
- Ensure proper safety and functionality of all scenic systems.
- Collaborate closely with other Production departments on elements that share responsibility, such as where Scenery interacts with Lighting or Props.
- Hire, manage, and dismiss scene shop staff, as necessary.
- Through supervision of the Deck Chief, ensure run crew on each production maintains the standards of Signature Theatre.
- Oversee the upkeep of scene shop equipment, including tool maintenance, shop organization, and stock management.
- With the Production Manager, develop long range plans for improvement and expansion of the scene shop and theatrical systems in the performance spaces.
- Overall maintain a safe and orderly working environment.
- Other duties as assigned.
Direct Reports and other Reporting Relationships
The Technical Director reports to the Production Manager and works closely with the Assistant Technical Director and fellow Production Department Heads. The TD directly manages the Lead Carpenter, Staff Carpenters, and Overhire Carpenters, and works closely with the Scenic Paint Charge and Deck Chief. Other contacts include fellow Production Staff members, Front of House, guest artists, and other Signature staff.
Qualifications
- 3+ years managing a professional theatrical scene shop and budget is preferred.
- Exceptional project management. Ability to elegantly and quickly solve technical and engineering challenges.
- Strong familiarity with rigging systems and best practices.
- Strong familiarity with AUTOCAD or Vectorworks drafting programs. Ability to draft in 3D strongly desired.
- Familiarity with Creative Conners systems is preferred.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Comfort driving an 18’ box truck is preferred.
- Ability to work collaboratively with Production colleagues to create a healthy, hard-working, team-oriented environment.
Working Conditions
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds unaided and in repetition, move around an office and shop, and frequently ascend/descend ladders or steps. The job is estimated at roughly 80% office time and 20% shop floor/theater time.
- Will be frequently exposed to the following shop conditions among others: loud noises, working at heights, in confined spaces, and in adverse weather/temperatures.
- Must maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Working hours are 7am-4pm with some weeks prior to and including technical rehearsals for mainstage productions requiring 50- to 60-hour work weeks, including nights and weekends.
Compensation and Benefits
The Technical Director position is a full-time exempt position with an annual salary of $70,000 – $80,000 and an excellent package of benefits, including medical, dental, disability and life insurance; paid vacation, sick and parental leave; as well as complimentary and discount tickets. Signature Theatre is also a qualifying employer for the Public Student Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF).
Location
This job is fully in-person, based at Signature Theatre’s facilities in Arlington, VA.

Box Office Associate
Signature Theatre is currently seeking a part-time Box Office Associate to join our Box Office Team. Associates cultivate a high standard of guest experience by assisting patrons in all things ticket related. The Box Office Associate will report to the Box Office Manager. Weekend availability is strongly preferred.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist patrons with purchases, exchanges, and donations.
- Provide information about shows and events happening at Signature and answer any questions patrons may have.
- Make outbound calls to patrons for annual subscription campaigns, show cancellations, check-ins and more.
- Read scripts before the season announcement and attend dress rehearsals to help answer patron inquiries.
- Complete complimentary ticket requests for staff, cast and crew.
- Process ticket donation requests.
- Help troubleshoot issues with patrons over the phone such as trouble accessing virtual programming, updating account information online or helping with online transactions.
- Retain institutional knowledge of Signature Theatre including FAQs, theatre accessibility, and all information patrons need to plan their visit to us, as well as a familiarity with Signature’s mission, values, and history.
- Enforce Signature’s ticketing policies and procedures.
- Participate in all-staff trainings as available.
- Assist Front of House Team during busy show periods.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous customer service experience helpful but not required.
- Friendly phone manners, excellent computer skills, detailed research skills and attention to detail.
- Experience using database ticketing systems or Tessitura is a plus.
- Must be a team player who is able to work well in a fast-paced environment.
- Available to work 20 hours per week including nights and weekends. Weekend availability preferred.
Compensation and Benefits
The Box Office Associate position is a part-time, hourly, non-exempt job with an hourly rate of $19/hr. This position is 20 hours per week, including some weekends and evenings. Benefits include complimentary and discount tickets as well as holiday pay for any hours worked on holidays outline in Signature’s employee handbook.

House Manager
Signature Theatre, a Tony Award®-winning, non-profit professional theater, in Arlington, Virginia seeks a part-time House Manager. House Managers are responsible for providing a high standard of guest service to achieve and maintain customer loyalty from both subscribers and single ticket buyers, maximize revenue for the Signature Shop, and directly supervise members of the Signature Ushers and Volunteers. House Managers report to the Guest Services Manager. House Managers are expected to provide the best patron experience possible at mainstage Signature productions, cabarets, and other events throughout the year.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide a high level of guest services dealing with all comments, complaints, and points raised by the public in Front of House areas and following up these points by immediate action or in consultation.
- Responsible for the safety of the audience, in case of an emergency and take the proper steps to either evacuate or secure the audience members. Handling all emergency situations in a calm and instructive manner.
- Maintains ticket-scanning equipment, assistive listening devices, and walkie-talkies for communicating with stage manager.
- Maintain the Signature Theatre Shop, including inventory checks and daily reconciliation.
- Work in conjunction with the Stage Manager to coordinate performance timelines, including preshow chat, curtain speeches, and intermission.
- Maintain all front of house areas, including lobbies, theatre spaces, Shop and Coat Check.
- Set-up and restore the house prior to and after each performance.
- Serve as an active member of the Front of House department and support the Guest Services Manager and Guest Services Coordinator in upkeep of the department by attending Team Meetings, assisting with Volunteer Trainings, and completing other assigned special projects.
- Directly supervise members of the Signature Usher & Volunteer Corps while on duty.
- Work proactively to anticipate the needs of patrons and Signature Theatre.
- Write and distribute performance reports & accident reports.
- Assist with other duties as assigned by the Guest Services Manager, Guest Services Coordinator, or other Signature Management on Duty.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required. Secondary Education preferred.
- Previous experience working live events and/or customer service role.
- Have strong interpersonal skills and able to provide excellent customer service and hospitality.
- Team player who can work well in a fast-paced environment.
- First Aid/CPR certified within 6 months of hiring.
- Available to work 20 hours per week.
Physical Requirements
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time, walk long distances, and climb up/downstairs.
- The employee is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or sit and must lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
Compensation
The House Manager position is a part-time, hourly non-exempt job with an hourly rate of $19/hr.

Usher
Signature Theatre, a Tony Award®-winning, non-profit professional theater, in Arlington, Virginia is seeking part-time Ushers to join our Front of House Team. Ushers are responsible for providing a high standard of guest service to achieve and maintain customer loyalty from both subscribers and single ticket buyers, maximize revenue for the Signature Shop, and ensure the safety of Patrons and Artists. Ushers report to the Front of House Operations Manager and House Manager on Duty. Ushers are expected to facilitate the best patron experience possible at mainstage Signature productions, cabarets, and other events throughout the year.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Meet and greet all patrons entering Signature’s Max or Ark Theatre, checking, or scanning for valid tickets.
- Be personal and pro-active in aiding all guests with the highest level of customer service and hospitality.
- Assist guests by providing accurate directions to seating sections within the theatres.
- Receive and quickly act upon requests or complaints from patrons; refer serious problems to the House Manager on Duty.
- Retain knowledge of the Signature Theatre’s history, staff, and emergency activity procedures.
- Enforce Signatures policies, rules, and Equity regulations.
- Aid the House Manager on duty to patrons in the event of an accident or injury.
- In the event of an emergency, assist in evacuating Signature Theatre, while maintaining a calm, professional demeanor.
- Perform additional functions and activities as directed by the House Manager on Duty or Front of House Operations Manager.

Teaching Artists
Signature Theatre’s Education Department is conducting an ongoing search for skilled part-time teaching artists for school partnerships, workshops and residencies.
Selected teaching artists will be kept in Signature Education’s teaching artist database and contacted when school partnerships require their specific talents in the classroom. Signature Education is looking for teaching artists with experience teaching acting, directing, voice, dance, playwrighting, technical theatre and theatrical design to middle school and high school students. The need for teaching artists is ongoing and this is a rolling application process.
Basic Duties / Requirements:
- Teaching artists create, oversee and supervise workshops, residencies and lessons as a Signature representative at partnering schools and organizations. Signature Teaching Artists are expected to be supportive, respectful and encouraging toward all students and classroom teachers. While Signature Education will generally not write lesson plans for Teaching Artists, artists will collaborate with Signature representatives, students, school representatives to create lesson plans and materials
- Teaching artists should know that they may teach anywhere within the DMV area and that they will be responsible for handling their own transportation to each school they’re assigned to. Should a workshop present itself that takes place online, teaching artists are requested to run the session with a strong connection to the internet.
- In addition to teaching experience, experience working professionally in theatre is preferred.
- Signature Theatre teaching artists work with diverse student populations and experience levels. Applicants with experience working with diverse populations, including but not limited to non-English, multilingual, neurodiverse, or disabled students are encouraged to apply.
