Business Associate

Signature Theatre, Arlington, Virginia’s Tony Award®-Winning Regional Theatre, seeks a Business Associate. The Business Associate will primarily provide support to the Finance and Administration Department with various administrative accounting functions including processing accounts payable, bookkeeping, processing payroll, filing electronic documents and preparing invoices of a $12 million operating budget. This position is based at Signature Theatre’s administrative offices in Arlington, VA, with possibility for a hybrid in person/remote schedule.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists Director of Finance & Administration with accounts receivable, accounts payable, and other administrative accounting functions, including data entry.
  • Prepare bank reconciliations for organization accounts.
  • Will help maintain the day-to-day accounting functions including A/R and A/P, reconciliation of bank and G/L accounts, daily deposits & cash disbursements.
  • Will support the HR Manager in weekly and semi-monthly payroll process.
  • Act in a support function to the Director of Finance & Administration and assist with the external auditors during the annual audit process. Assists with preparation of the annual audit preparations and annual budget (e.g., gathering documents for the auditors and internal staff)
  • Maintains accounting procedures manual for the Finance & Administration Department
  • Oversee and support administrative duties in the office and ensure that the office runs smoothly.
  • Manage office supplies inventor and place orders as necessary.
  • Other administration duties as needed.

Qualifications
Candidate must have knowledge of not-for-profit accounting and payroll (strong preference for performing arts/unions). Must be an organized/efficient independent worker with experience in QuickBooks and bill.com is preferred. Preference for candidates with experience in a similar position.

Compensation
Signature Theatre offers a salary up to $40,000 annually, with excellent benefits including medical, dental, disability and life insurance; vacation, sick and parental leave; as well as complimentary and discount tickets. This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position at 40 hours per week with a possibility for telework/hybrid work environment.

First Hand

Position Purpose and Objectives
Under the direction of the Associate Costume Director/Staff Draper and Costume Director, the First Hand serves as a key member of the Production Department Staff. The First Hand assists the Staff Draper and overhire drapers with costume builds, fittings, and alterations for all company productions.

Essential Job Functions

  • Assist in laying out of patterns and cutting of garments.
  • Provide instruction to stitchers and other costume shop personnel on garment construction, alterations, and notes.
  • Assist in selection of costume build materials and calculation of yardages.
  • Carry out construction assignments.
  • Assist in the prepping and returning of unused, purchased items.
  • Assist in measuring actors as requested by the Staff Draper and Costume Director.
  • Attend fittings and provide assistance as requested by the Staff Draper and Costume Director.
  • Assist in the dispersion/explanation of fitting alteration notes to stitchers.
  • Aid in the completion and delivery of rehearsal mock-ups, as needed.
  • Advise Costume Director of issues arising out of the build process and offer solutions, if applicable.
  • Complete specific construction/alteration projects assigned by Staff Draper and Costume Director.
  • Pull costumes and maintain records of work done for morning note calls during technical rehearsals.
  • Ensure assigned costume shop workspaces are kept in a clean, organized, and safe manner.
  • Communicate with Costume Director regarding equipment condition to ensure all equipment maintenance is up to date.
  • Assist in the organization, restock, and maintenance of costume shop resources, including garments, fabric and notions, tools, supplies, and equipment.
  • Be an active participant in Signature’s work in being a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive workplace.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in collaboration with theater personnel, professional creative teams, staff, management, and other visiting artists.

Working Requirements

Qualifications

  • Demonstrate experience as a First Hand in a professional costume environment or a combination of equivalent experience and training.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of costume construction related disciplines including flat patterning, draping, cutting, costume fitting procedures and etiquette, alteration techniques, machine sewing (industrial and domestic), hand sewing, and safe use and maintenance of costume shop machinery.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of costume history, period garment construction, and costume construction materials such as fabrics, interfacing, closures, and other notions.
  • Possess strong critical thinking skills, an eye for detail, ability to problem solve, excellent organizational skills, and be able to carry out projects from beginning to end.
  • Possess willingness to experiment with new materials and learn new techniques.
  • Possess ability to work under the stress of deadlines and adapt to changing priorities while maintaining a positive and productive attitude.

Compensation

Props Runner

Position Purpose and Objectives
Under the direction of the Deck Chief and the Stage Management team, prep, set, shift, maintain and strike all hand props and set dressing for all company productions. Assist in all scene changes and in maintaining the backstage working environment. Execute small fixes needed over the run of a show. Oversee other crew in props related duties as assigned by Stage Management & Deck Chief. Maintain clear communication about the status of backstage props with the Props Master and Associate Props Master. Report to the Prop Shop when there is no show running.

Essential Job Functions

  • Prepare and preset props for each performance.
  • Complete handoffs of props to actors as directed.
  • Clear props from the stage house over course of each performance.
  • Clean and repair all props and set dressing for each performance.
  • Assist the Stage Management team in updating and maintaining props run sheets.
  • Assist the Props Shop in the fabrication of individual props as directed by the Associate Props Master and Props Master
  • Check in weekly with the Props Master and Associate Props Master about any backstage prop needs and status updates that isn’t otherwise mentioned in the Performance Reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Deck Sound Engineer

Signature Theatre, a Tony Award-Winning LORT B theatre, seeks a Deck Sound Engineer to maintain all actor microphones and wireless transmitters, wireless receiver packages, orchestra sound systems, and audio practicals.

Essential Job Functions

  • Assist actors in dressing of wireless microphones and manage the running of all onstage sound systems as assigned by Resident Sound Designer.
  • Assist the Resident Sound Designer in the installation, maintenance, and load-out of all sound, orchestral, and backstage communication systems.
  • Provide support to run crew and stage management for backstage communication systems.
  • Maintain sound, orchestral, and communication inventories.
  • Maintain all company productions and their artistic and technical values.
  • Substitute for the Lead Sound Engineer and mix the sound design on smaller projects as assigned by Resident Sound Designer.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Experience with theatrical sound systems and equipment including wireless (RF) microphones, frequency coordination software, mixing consoles (both analog and digital), amplifiers and processing equipment.
  • Experience putting wireless microphones on actors and basic show run responsibilities such as rechargeable battery management, sweat protection and building ear rigs.
  • Knowledge of theatrical software such as Qlab and Dante is preferred.
  • A basic understanding of loudspeaker installation and rigging.

Cook

Signature Theatre, a Tony Award®-winning, non-profit professional theater, in Arlington, Virginia seeks a part-time Cook for Ali’s Bar, located inside Signature Theatre. The Cook will prep ingredients, prepare existing menu items from recipes, and know the safe and proper methods of food preparation and operation of different kitchen appliances and utensils. The Cook will also provide input to the Head Chef and Food and Beverage Manager in dish creation and basic kitchen maintenance and cleaning.

Essential Duties and Responsibilties

  • Preopening kitchen prep work – including meis-en-place, pre shift inventory and cleaning.
  • Preparing menu items and plating according to recipes and/or direction of the Head Chef.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and compliance with food sanitation requirements by properly handling food and ensuring correct storage.
  • Assisting Head Chef in taking weekly inventory to ensure the kitchen is well-stocked.
  • Adhering to all food safety and quality regulations.
  • Maintaining a clean working space by removing trash, and washing plates, utensils, and equipment.

Qualifications

  • Have or obtain a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) certificate.
  • Availability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Basic math and computer skills. Experience in POS system Toast preferred.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong task and time management abilities.
  • Eye for detail and experience in various cooking methods and procedures.
  • Understanding of food service health and safety.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, etc for extended periods, and lift up to 30 lbs.

Carpenter – Overhire

The Tony Award-winning Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA and of the DC metro area, is seeking Overhire Scenic for our current season. Successful candidates will work under the supervision of the Technical Director and Asst. Technical Director, building and installing scenery for various shows in the season.

Position requires knowledge of theatrical stage carpentry. Must be able to work some weekends, climb ladders and lift 50 -75 pounds over your head. Competitive salary and benefits for qualified candidates. Position available immediately.

Usher

Signature Theatre, a Tony Award®-winning, non-profit professional theater, in Arlington, Virginia is seeking part-time Ushers to join our Front of House Team. Ushers are responsible for providing a high standard of guest service to achieve and maintain customer loyalty from both subscribers and single ticket buyers, maximize revenue for the Signature Shop, and ensure the safety of Patrons and Artists. Ushers report to the Front of House Operations Manager and House Manager on Duty. Ushers are expected to facilitate the best patron experience possible at mainstage Signature productions, cabarets, and other events throughout the year.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Meet and greet all patrons entering Signature’s Max or Ark Theatre, checking, or scanning for valid tickets.
  • Be personal and pro-active in aiding all guests with the highest level of customer service and hospitality.
  • Assist guests by providing accurate directions to seating sections within the theatres.
  • Receive and quickly act upon requests or complaints from patrons; refer serious problems to the House Manager on Duty.
  • Retain knowledge of the Signature Theatre’s history, staff, and emergency activity procedures.
  • Enforce Signatures policies, rules, and Equity regulations.
  • Aid the House Manager on duty to patrons in the event of an accident or injury.
  • In the event of an emergency, assist in evacuating Signature Theatre, while maintaining a calm, professional demeanor.
  • Perform additional functions and activities as directed by the House Manager on Duty or Front of House Operations Manager.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Other customer service helpful but not required. Training will be provided.

Food Expeditor and Dishwasher

Signature Theatre, a Tony Award®-winning, non-profit professional theater, in Arlington, Virginia seeks a part-time Food Expeditor and Dishwasher, to assist a busy kitchen at Ali’s Bar, located inside Signature Theatre.

The Food Expeditor and Dish Washer will be responsible for maintaining the flow of orders from the bar to the kitchen to the diners, ensuring orders are completed quickly and correctly, assisting with the finishing touches on dishes, and conducting quality control on each dish and delivering food to either bartender or to diners at their tables. This position will also be responsible for busing and sanitizing dining tables, collecting utensils and properly cleaning and restocking supplies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Informing the bartenders when certain dishes or ingredients have run out and passing food requests from the bartenders to the kitchen.
  • Ensuring that all orders are completed in time and with the correct priority.
  • Inspecting the cleanliness, presentation, and temperature of completed dishes.
  • Performing the finishing touches to completed dishes, such as adding garnishes and removing smudges.
  • Keeping the cooking, storage, and prep areas clean, neat, and well-stocked.
  • Ensuring all staff adheres to health and safety standards.
  • Collecting and cleaning used dining ware from the dining area, bar and kitchen. Cleaning and sanitizing tables and surfaces.

Teaching Artists

Signature Theatre’s Education Department is conducting an ongoing search for skilled part-time teaching artists for school partnerships, workshops and residencies.

Selected teaching artists will be kept in Signature Education’s teaching artist database and contacted when school partnerships require their specific talents in the classroom. Signature Education is looking for teaching artists with experience teaching acting, directing, voice, dance, playwrighting, technical theatre and theatrical design to middle school and high school students. The need for teaching artists is ongoing and this is a rolling application process.

Basic Duties / Requirements:

  • Teaching artists create, oversee and supervise workshops, residencies and lessons as a Signature representative at partnering schools and organizations. Signature Teaching Artists are expected to be supportive, respectful and encouraging toward all students and classroom teachers. While Signature Education will generally not write lesson plans for Teaching Artists, artists will collaborate with Signature representatives, students, school representatives to create lesson plans and materials
  • Teaching artists should know that they may teach anywhere within the DMV area and that they will be responsible for handling their own transportation to each school they’re assigned to. Should a workshop present itself that takes place online, teaching artists are requested to run the session with a strong connection to the internet.
  • In addition to teaching experience, experience working professionally in theatre is preferred.
  • Signature Theatre teaching artists work with diverse student populations and experience levels. Applicants with experience working with diverse populations, including but not limited to non-English, multilingual, neurodiverse, or disabled students are encouraged to apply.
