Several months before Mary Rodgers’s death in mid-2014, Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt, who were busy turning her 1972 young-adult comic novel, “Freaky Friday,” into a musical, had the opportunity to play the first few songs for her in her Manhattan apartment.
It was cause for no small amount of anxiety for Yorkey and Kitt. Although they had won the Pulitzer Prize for an earlier musical, “Next to Normal,” in 2010, and had numerous other Broadway credits, they were not counting on receiving accolades from the tough-minded Rodgers. Hers was an intimidating pedigree: The daughter of composer Richard Rodgers — half of the revered team of Rodgers and Hammerstein — she was a respected Broadway songwriter herself, most notably as composer of the Golden Age musical comedy, “Once Upon a Mattress.”
