Front of House Operations Manager

Signature Theatre seeks a Front of House Operations Manager with facilities or operations management experience, who excels at customer service, is an outstanding communicator and team player with excellent attention to detail and follow-through. The staff member in this position’s primary responsibility is ensuring Signature’s audience has a fantastic experience from the moment they enter our front door until they leave. This position is part of Signature’s marketing team and reports to the Director of Marketing.

Front of House Responsibilities

  • Hire, train and supervise Signature’s house managers. Including overseeing work schedules and processing payroll.
  • Oversee patron seating area of the theater, including ensuring seating is maintained and orderly.
  • Signature has changeable black box theaters. For each new seating configuration advise on potential audience traffic patterns, plan entrance and egress, and work with production to remove any potential patron impediments.
  • Create and execute emergency plans including life safety, fire egress, power outages, etc. and oversee training of staff in these areas.
  • Ensure that the public areas of the theater stay clean and in good working order. Coordinate with production on maintenance issues.
  • Work closely with Box Office, bar, production and others to create and deliver superlative customer experiences.

Volunteer Responsibilities

  • Recruit, train and act as the main point of contact for Signature’s volunteers (ushers, administrative volunteers).
  • Set up volunteer schedules in coordination with the box office, website and database managers. Make sure that enough volunteers are scheduled for all of Signature’s public events.
  • Ensure excellent customer service from all Signature volunteers. Provide support and further training for volunteers not meeting expectations or find graceful exit strategies for volunteers whose work is below standards.
  • Plan volunteer appreciation events.

Signature Shop Responsibilities

  • Set up and run the lobby shop, which includes Signature show merchandise as well as consignment merchandise from performers.
  • Set up and maintain merchandise point of sale system (Square).
  • Maintain accurate inventory and provide weekly sales reports. Work diligently to prevent loss.
  • Work with Signature’s accounting department in an accurate and timely way for daily cash needs, inventory reports and check requests for consignment inventory.

The successful candidate will demonstrate experience or ability in the following areas:

  • Operations or facility management and customer service management. Previous theater management experience is highly desirable.
  • Supervisory experience – including hiring and training employees.
  • Excellent interpersonal communications and strong public speaking skills.
  • Basic budgeting and financial literacy knowledge.
  • Ability to lift and transport heavy boxes of merchandise and supplies.
  • Driver’s License and access to a car is a plus.
  • Willingness to perform other duties as requested.

Director of Information Services

Signature Theatre, a Tony Award®-winning, non-profit professional theater, in Arlington, Virginia seeks a Director of Information Services to join a dynamic and exciting company.

The Director of Information Services provides high-quality technical support and innovation for its user base of nearly 70 employees. The Director of Information Services is responsible for maintaining day-to-day business continuity, while planning and executing new strategic initiatives to promote Signature’s technological growth as an organization. The Director serves as a member of Signature’s ten-member Senior Staff and has direct oversight of the Database Coordinator, who administers Signature Theatre’s CRM systems.

Experience and Requirements
The ideal candidate will have five years’ experience in information technology in a senior-level capacity. Candidate must have a high level of intellectual curiosity, ability to multi-task, and the capacity to switch gears to accommodate the needs of a highly agile organization.

The candidate must be a strategic thinker who will be committed to finding elegant and affordable solutions to organizational challenges and who will contribute strongly to Signature’s collaborative, creative culture.

The candidate must have solid knowledge of the configuration of end-user and server hardware and operating systems, including printers. Candidates must have the ability to manage a medium-sized Ethernet-based network, including 80 configurations of switches, firewalls, network-attached storage, and wireless access points. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for Signature’s office machine leases and maintenance (phones, copiers, postage, POS systems, etc).

The candidate must also have strong familiarity with Microsoft Windows Server 2012 or 2016, including configuration of Active Directory, file sharing, print services, DHCP, and DNS and comfortability operating in a mixed environment that includes both Windows and Mac operating systems. The ideal candidate will also have experience administering email services in Microsoft Exchange and/or Exchange Online.

The candidate will be responsible for overseeing the ongoing use and maintenance of Signature’s main business/commerce SQL database, Tessitura (and its affiliated products) as well as planning for future uses; previous experience with implementing, configuring or administering Tessitura or similar program is a significant plus.

Additional Attributes:

  • Experience implementing virtualized Windows servers in a Microsoft Hyper-V environment
  • Strong understanding of the Office 365 platform, including Azure Active Directory
  • Solid knowledge of SQL and the administration of Microsoft SQL Server, as well as SQL Server Reporting Services
  • Experience configuring Microsoft SharePoint and/or SharePoint Online
  • Understanding of VoIP (voice over IP) telephony
  • Basic knowledge of configuring QuickBooks in a multi-user environment
  • Experience negotiating and implementing contracts with service providers
  • Experience with creating and managing departmental and project budgets
  • Strong industry knowledge and demonstrated ability to keep business systems up-to-date and in compliance with applicable regulations and security recommendations.

Capital Campaign Manager

Signature Theatre is currently working to raise essential private funding in a capital campaign for expanded facilities and an artistic excellence fund. The Capital Campaign Manager will support the Director of Development, Board, Executive Leadership and Capital Campaign Committee in their work on the capital campaign. This position is based at Signature Theatre’s administrative offices in Shirlington Village in Arlington, VA.

Campaign Management

  • Overall campaign management and organization including pipelines, prospect tracking, strategy tracking, task assignment and maintenance of timelines
  • Researching and identifying prospects
  • Scheduling meetings, preparing talking points, assembling presentations, and full meeting preparation for Board members, campaign volunteers and Signature staff
  • Overseeing (with Development Assistant) acknowledgement of all campaign gifts and pledges and preparation of pledge payment reminders and pledge agreements
  • Working with the Director of Development in writing all campaign correspondence including solicitation proposals, meeting requests, and meeting follow up
  • Maintaining master campaign calendar to maximize cultivation events and keep campaign committee on track
  • Organizing and monitoring volunteer assignments and follow up, and assisting in all aspects volunteer support and solicitations

Organizational Support

  • With the Database Coordinator and Deputy Director of Development, Individual Giving, establishes and maintains methodologies and procedures for moves management in the database, setting quality control standards and ensuring the efficient flow of information into and out of the database including research, reporting formats, gift processing procedures, database management standards and maintains stewardship and donor relations activities, setting quality control standards
  • Represents the Development department on internal matters and to external constituencies as needed
  • Maintains excellent relationships with Signature Theatre donors, colleagues, senior staff members, Capital Campaign Committee and Board of Directors

Experience and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 3-5 years of progressively responsible fundraising or related experience
  • Demonstrated ability to create and execute a complicated project management plan, including managing executive leadership and board task lists
  • Demonstrated ability to engage donors and volunteers successfully
  • Excellent organization, writing, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Track record of achieving progressively increasing revenue goals
  • Ability to handle multiple jobs in a demanding environment
  • Occasional evening and weekend work is required

Part-Time House Manager

The House Manager is responsible for providing a high standard of guest service in order to achieve and maintain customer loyalty from both subscribers and single ticket buyers, as well as to maximize revenue from the shop. The House Manager reports to the Guest Service Manager and Senior House Manager. He/she will be expected to provide the best patron experience possible.

House Manager Responsibilities

  • Setting up and restoring the house prior to and after each performance
  • Working with all other departments, enthusiastically and proactively contributing to the theatre
  • To work proactively to anticipate the needs of patrons and Signature Theatre
  • Handle emergency situations in a calm and instructive manner
  • To provide detailed information to all departments on performance/front of house related issues in the form of regular performance reports
  • Train and monitor volunteer usher corps
  • To assist with other duties as assigned.

Experience and Requirements
2+ years of excellent customer service experience. Experience in cash handling and volunteer management a plus. Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills. Computer skills including Microsoft Office.

Education and Community Outreach Internship

Signature Theatre’‘s Education Department operates year-round and has full and part-time internships available throughout the year. Education interns should be current college students who are planning on actively pursuing careers in theater. Interns are treated as a vital part of Signature’s staff and gain valuable real-life work experience at a professional, award-winning, nationally-renowned theater. All interns at Signature Theatre must be currently enrolled in school and must be receiving credit for their internship. Signature will modify the internship to meet the requirements of your university’s career or internship office.

Signature Theatre’‘s Education programs have received national recognition and respect. Interns in the Education department fill a vital role, serving in administrative, teaching and dramaturgical capacities. Interns assist with Signature in the Schools in rehearsals, in-class workshops and in preparation of study materials studied by nearly 1,800 students annually. Additionally, they coordinate free community events, summer programming, assist in supervising The Apprentice at Signature program, and oversee administration for classes and programs. They also help maintain administrative duties for all Education programs. On occasion, they may serve as a dramaturg for Signature’s main stage productions.

How long will it take to know if a decision has been made regarding my application? It can take several weeks to hear back on the status of an application. We appreciate your patience.

Are interns paid? Interns are not paid, however, Signature will work closely with your university to ensure you receive credit for your time at Signature.
Does Signature provide housing for interns? Unfortunately, we cannot provide housing for interns. There are several websites and organizations in the DC area that can aid in finding housing for internships including The Washington Intern Housing Network. We will be happy to put you in contact with other interns who may be in need of roommates.
Is Signature Metro accessible? Signature Theatre is located in The Village at Shirlington, which is not Metro accessible. However, several buses leave from the nearby Pentagon City, Crystal City, and Pentagon stations to Shirlington on a regular basis. Additionally, there is a substantial amount of free parking near the Theatre.
Is it possible to receive school credit for my internship? It is! If your school offers credit for internships, and you are interested in receiving credit for your internship at Signature, please make sure we know what’s required of you and, just as importantly, what’s required of us!
What are the hours for internships? Generally, interns will be expected to work Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 6 PM. However, occasional evenings, early hours or weekends may be expected.
Is it possible to be a full-time intern at Signature and hold an outside job? While some have done it in the past, we wouldn’‘t recommend it. Interning at Signature is a full-time job and depending on the internship, the schedule can fluctuate from week to week, making it difficult to pursue outside work.
