Women for Afghan Women (WAW) is a grassroots civil society organization dedicated to protecting and promoting the rights of disenfranchised Afghan women and girls in Afghanistan and the United States. In particular, WAW works to help Afghan women and girls exercise their rights to pursue their individual potential to self-determination, and to representation in all areas of life—political, social, cultural, and economic. WAW relentlessly advocates for women’s rights and challenges the norms that underpin gender-based violence to influence attitudes and bring about change. Virginia has the second largest Afghan community in the US—having over 23,000 or 18% of the US total Afghan population.


Afghan-American Community Organization

Their mission is to advance the Afghan-American community through education and outreach, and promote civic and social engagement. In early 2015, the Afghan-American Conference (AAC) was launched at the University of California, Berkeley. AAC provided a forum for the Afghan-American community to address these difficult topics in a respectful, forward-thinking manner. It is a grassroots effort at shedding light on these pressing issues, inspiring action, sharing resources, and activating change from within the community. What was intended to be a one-time conference, turned into an annual event, with annual conferences being held from 2015-2019, and plans for future conferences post pandemic.

For over 50 years, the Aga Khan Foundation has partnered with communities in some of the most remote, hard-to-reach parts of Asia and Africa to build better futures together. The Aga Khan Foundation manages the French Medical Institute for Mothers and Children (www.fmic.org.af), ​a 169-bedded tertiary hospital based in Kabul. They provide world-class in-patient, out-patient and diagnostic services to children, mothers and adults in a variety of disciplines with the help of well qualified doctors, nurses and paramedics in a hygienic and friendly environment.

The U.S.-Afghan Women’s Council (USAWC) is a non-partisan public-private partnership that convenes governments, civil society and the private sector around the goal of supporting Afghan women and girl’s education, healthcare, economic empowerment and leadership. The Council leverages public and private resources to advance member-driven initiatives and highlights the experiences and needs of Afghan women and girls.


Onward for Afghan Women

Onward for Afghan Women is an initiative of the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security (GIWPS) aimed at elevating and equipping Afghan women leaders with opportunities to continue their advocacy on behalf of Afghan women and girls. For over a decade, GIWPS has stood with Afghan women to advance inclusive peace and ensure their voices are centered in global policy debates. Since the fall of Kabul in August 2021 and the Taliban’s swift rollback of women’s rights, GIWPS has played a leading role in the evacuation and dignified resettlement of prominent at-risk Afghan women leaders.
