Join Signature on Monday, April 14 for a star-studded evening with live performances and video tributes to celebrate Tony® and Emmy Award® winner Mandy Patinkin, the recipient of the 2025 Stephen Sondheim Award!   

The presentation will feature tribute performances by notable Broadway and Signature artists including Annaleigh Ashford (Broadway's Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George), Ben Platt (Broadway’s Parade, Dear Evan Hansen), Nathan Gunn (The Metropolitan Opera’s The Magic Flute, Live from Lincoln Center’s Carousel), Ángel Lozada (Broadway’s Bad Cinderella, Signature’s In the Heights), Awa Sal Secka (Signature’s Ragtime, National Tour of Jaja’s African Hair Braiding), Tracy Lynn Olivera (Signature’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Round House Theatre’s Next to Normal) and more.

Mandy Patinkin

Mandy Patinkin was nominated several times for the award-winning Showtime Original Series Homeland as ‘CIA Agent Saul Berenson.' In television, Mandy won an Emmy Award, as well as a Golden Globe, for his performance in the CBS series Chicago Hope. Most recently, Mandy can be seen in NBC’s Brilliant Minds. He recently wrapped on The Artist, directed by Aram Rappaport for The Network. He starred in the CBS series Criminal Minds as well as in the Showtime Original Series Dead Like Me, and recently in Death and Other Details for ABC Signature and Hulu. Patinkin, a graduate of the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City, has been fortunate to carve out a varied career including theater, the concert stage, film, television, and as a recording artist. His career started triumphantly with his Broadway debut as the role of ‘Che’ in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita. The role won him his first Tony Award, which was followed by another nomination in 1984 for the musical Sunday in the Park with George. In 1989, he began his concert career at Joseph Papp’s Public Theater in New York City. Since then he has toured, and continue to tour, across the globe, while also collaborating with other artists. His feature film career has allowed him to act in films such as Wonder, Life Itself, Wish I Was Here, Yentl, Daniel, Ragtime, Dick Tracy, The Princess Bride, and many more.

About the Sondheim Award Gala

Signature’s annual Sondheim Award Gala honors those who have contributed to the works of Stephen Sondheim and the canon of American Musical Theater. The Sondheim Award Gala benefits Signature’s artistic, education, and community outreach programs.

The Gala is a festive evening that includes cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, a gourmet seated dinner, and a delicious dessert buffet. Each year, the honoree receives a special award presentation that includes tribute performances by notable Broadway and Signature artists.

Sondheim Award Past Recipients

Chita Rivera

2023

Created the role of Claire in the original production of The Visit at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. An accomplished and versatile actress/singer/dancer, Chita Rivera has won two Tony Awards® as Best Leading Actress in a Musical (Kiss of the Spider Woman and The Rink) and received seven additional Tony® nominations. She recently starred in the Broadway and touring productions of The Dancer's Life, a dazzling new musical celebrating her spectacular career, written by Terrence McNally and directed by Graciela Daniele. Chita received the coveted Kennedy Center Honor in Washington, DC in December, 2002, and is the first Hispanic ever chosen to receive this award. She recently starred in the revival of the Broadway musical Nine with Antonio Banderas. She trained as a ballerina (from age 11) before receiving a scholarship to the American School of Ballet from legendary George Balanchine. Chita's first appearance (age 17) was in the chorus of Call Me Madam. Her electric performance as Anita in the Broadway premiere of West Side Story (1957) brought her stardom, which she repeated in London. Her career is highlighted by starring roles in Bye Bye Birdie, Chicago, Jerry's Girls and Mr. Wonderful and the original Broadway casts of Guys and Dolls, Can-Can, Seventh Heaven. On tour: Born Yesterday, The Rose Tattoo, Call Me Madam, Threepenny Opera, Sweet Charity, Kiss Me Kate, Zorba, Can-Can with The Rockettes. Her most treasured production is her daughter, singer/dancer/choreographer Lisa Mordente.
