“Get your high heels ready.”

That was the cryptic text message that Eric Schaeffer, artistic director of Signature Theatre, sent to Bobby Smith more than a year ago. Schaeffer wanted Smith to play Albin, the drag queen at the heart of Jerry Herman’s Tony Award-winning 1983 musical, “La Cage Aux Folles.”

“Daunting,” Smith says of the prospect, although it’s surely not because he lacks the chops. Need a vaudevillian to play the con man Rooster’s song and dance in “Annie”? A knowing adult for the gorgeous melodies and piercing lyrics in “Simply Sondheim”? Someone who can spoof the genre with aplomb in “The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!)”? Smith’s your man.
