Lenore Skenazy is an American journalist, author and advocate best known for founding the Free-Range Kids movement, which encourages fostering independence in children by allowing them more freedom to explore and engage with their environments. Her work gained national attention in 2008 when she wrote about allowing her young son to navigate New York City’s subway alone, sparking widespread debate on modern parenting norms. Skenazy’s book, Free-Range Kids: How to Raise Safe, Self-Reliant Children (Without Going Nuts with Worry), advocates for reducing parental anxiety and overprotectiveness. Through her organization, Let Grow, she continues to champion children’s independence, resilience and mental well-being, influencing education and parenting practices and pushing back against the culture of overprotection.
