Individual Retirement Account (IRA)

You can make a tax-free gift to Signature Theatre from your IRA. Anyone over age 70½ can avoid taxes by making a gift directly from an individual retirement account.

As you may know, the IRA Charitable Rollover has been signed into permanent law. This means that you can make a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) to the Theatre from your IRA without paying income taxes on the contribution; however, the contribution does not qualify as a charitable gift for tax purposes.

Specific requirements include:

  • You must be at least 70½ years old.
  • You must decline goods or services.
  • Your rollover may not exceed $105,000. Married couples, if both meet qualifications and have separate IRAs, can donate up to $210,000 combined.

Additionally, many IRAs are subject to annual required minimum distributions (RMDs). The IRS requires a minimum amount to be distributed from most retirement plans annually beginning at a certain age. The age account owners must commence taking lifetime RMDs is based on their birth year. Through 2032, RMDs must be withdrawn annually after reaching age 73, however it could range from age 72-75. More details on RMDs can be found here.

RMDs apply to most employer-sponsored qualified retirement plans like 401(k)s, Roth 401(k)s, 403(b)s, 457(b)s, profit-sharing plans, other defined contribution plans, defined benefit plans, etc., as well as traditional IRAs and IRA-based plans such as SEPs, SARSEPs, and SIMPLE IRAs.

RMDs are generally taxed as ordinary income; however, if you are over age 70½, do not need the RMD to cover your expenses, and are charitably inclined, you could donate all or part of that RMD to avoid paying income tax on the amount donated. QCD donors will not receive an income tax deduction for the charitable donation, but do not have to pay income taxes on that income. If you are no longer itemizing deductions, given the increased standard deduction, you might consider giving through a QCD to reduce your income subject to tax. We suggest working with your CPA to determine what's most appropriate for you. More details on RMDs can be found here.

Additionally, please consider making Signature a beneficiary of your retirement plan; it is both tax efficient and as easy as changing the beneficiary form with your IRA administrator and designating Signature Theatre as a primary, contingent or partial beneficiary.

To make a gift, please send a letter to your IRA administrator requesting a direct charitable distribution to Signature Theatre in the amount you wish to donate. The letter should include Signature’s Tax ID #62-1417785.

Donor-Advised Funds (DAF)

Donor-advised funds (DAF) are a centralized vehicle for charitable giving. With a DAF, charitably inclined individuals, families and businesses make an irrevocable gift to a public charity that sponsors a donor-advised fund program and may take an immediate tax deduction. Donors can then recommend grants over time to IRS-qualified 501(c )(3) public charities like Signature Theatre.

How does it work?

  • Establish your Donor Advised Fund by making an irrevocable, tax-deductible donation to a public charity that sponsors a DAF program
  • Advise the investment allocation of the donated assets (any investment growth is tax-free)
  • Recommend grants to qualified public charities of your choice

Since the original contribution to the DAF provided the maximum tax deduction, the donor-advisor cannot receive any benefits that would change the value of the tax deduction. However, the donor-advisor can receive benefits that have insubstantial or no fair market value.

When donating to Signature through a DAF, please authorize your fund manager to release your name so that we can record the gift properly and advise them to mail the check to: Signature Theatre, Development Office, 4200 Campbell Avenue, Arlington, VA 22206. For more information, please contact the Development Office at 571.527.1828 or development@sigtheatre.org.
