HR/Business Manager

Signature Theatre is seeking an HR professional who will play a pivotal role in enhancing the Theatre’s HR operations and strategy. This is a great opportunity to support and make significant contributions to a nationally recognized regional theatre. The HR/Business Manager will lead and direct the routine HR functions within the Finance & Administration Department, including payroll administration, recruitment, employee relations, compensation, and benefits, and enforcing company policies and practices. Report to and assist the Director of Finance & Administration with reporting, reconciliation & management of a $13 million operating budget.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage daily HR aspects of the department and its staff to ensure projects are completed and goals and cross-departmental needs are met.
  • Oversee the daily HR workflow, including the related work of the Assistant HR/Business Manager.
  • Oversee weekly payroll; prepare and administer semi-monthly payroll.
  • Handle discipline and termination of employees in accordance with organizational policy.
  • Partner with Senior Staff to understand and execute the organization’s human resource and talent strategy particularly as it relates to current and future talent needs, recruiting, retention, and succession planning.
  • Prepare annual personnel budget for Senior Staff.
  • Prepare and share talking points for all bi-monthly staff meetings to provide necessary HR updates.
  • Meet weekly with the Director of Finance & Administration and bi-monthly with the Managing Director to present and collaborate on strategic HR projects in alignment with the organization’s goals.
  • Manage the talent acquisition process, which may include recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of qualified job applicants, particularly for managerial, exempt, and professional roles; collaborate with departmental managers to understand skills and competencies required for openings.
  • Oversee the effective onboarding, new hire orientation, and offboarding of all employees, closely collaborating with cross-departmental managers.
  • Oversee employee policy and handbook maintenance.
  • Manage the administration of benefits, leave, and reimbursement policies.
  • Conduct all annual state and federal government required compliance reporting, including workers’ compensation audit, injury and illnesses reporting, ACA, etc.
  • Administer year-end W-2 and 1095-C tax documents.
  • Plan and execute special events such as benefits enrollment, organization-wide meetings, educational seminars, and employee recognition events.
  • Manage the filing of workers’ compensation claims.
  • Verify unemployment claims for laid-off employees.
  • Educate employees on benefits available at Signature Theatre.
  • Assist Director of Finance and Administration in working with insurance agents on maintaining proper liability coverage and with providing monthly financial information to the Board of Directors.
  • Provide budget information to staff and departments as needed.
  • Reconcile budget discrepancies with departments.
  • Reconcile monthly payroll bank statements.
  • Provide support for the annual financial audit.
  • Perform other duties as necessary or assigned.

DIRECT REPORTS AND OTHER REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

  • Reports to Director of Finance and Administration
  • Will delegate and closely work with Assistant HR/Business Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree in related field is strongly preferred.
  • 3-5 years of human resource management experience strongly preferred.
  • HR certification preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations.
  • Thorough knowledge of non-profit accounting and payroll with a strong preference for experience working in the performing arts and with unions.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the organization’s HRIS, ADP, and talent management systems.
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks or similar accounting software preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

COMPENSATION
The HR/Business Manager position is a full-time exempt position with an annual salary of $65,000 - $70,000 and an excellent package of benefits, including medical, dental, disability and life insurance; paid vacation, sick and parental leave; as well as complimentary and discount tickets. Signature Theatre is also a qualifying employer for the Public Student Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF).

LOCATION AND IN-OFFICE REQUIREMENTS
The administrative office hours are 10am-6pm Monday through Friday. This position is Hybrid, 2-3 days in the office required.

Assistant Education Program Manager

Signature Theatre is seeking an enthusiastic and skilled arts educator and administrator to serve as Signature’s Assistant Education Program Manager. This full-time exempt position works with Signature’s Education Director and Education Program Manager in a wide range of duties, focused on supporting and improving Signature's efforts to bring artistry and community throughout the DMV area. The position provides teaching, administrative and dramaturgical work along with opportunities to create growth strategy for Signature's Education programming in collaboration with other department members. Signature's Education programming reaches nearly 10,000 people annually and is set to expand dramatically as the Signature Theatre Education Studios opens this year. This position reports to the Education Director. Applicants should show both teaching and administrative experience.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Managing tuition and registration for Signature’s onsite education programming.
  • Assisting in overseeing quality and safety of onsite education programming.  
  • Assisting Education Director in recruiting new teaching artists.
  • Overseeing onboarding for onsite teaching artists.  
  • Working with Education Director on developing new audience enhancement educational programming and improving existing audience enhancement educational programming.
  • Teaching theatre and arts integration programming onsite and offsite at area schools.  
  • Working with Education Director and Education Program Manager in developing curriculum for a variety of programs.  
  • Assisting Education Director and Education Program Manager in training new teaching artists.
  • Developing dramaturgical materials for student matinee audiences and for audience enhancement programming. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience teaching musical theatre, acting or arts integration to high school students.
  • Experience developing innovative theatre curriculum and lesson plans.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to learn other software programs, including Tessitura.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong research skills.  
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education experience, preferably in theater, theater education, arts management or a related field, is preferred.

OTHER DETAILS

Part Time

Bartender

Signature Theatre, a Tony Award®-winning, non-profit professional theater, in Arlington, Virginia seeks experienced bartenders for Ali’s Bar, located inside Signature Theatre. This is a part-time, hourly, non-exempt position that reports to the Guest Services Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Welcome customers, determine customer beverage preferences, make recommendations, and take drink and food orders.
  • Inform customers about new beverages and specials.
  • Select and mix ingredients, garnish glasses, and serve beverages to customers.
  • Answer basic inquiries about the current shows such as length, intermission time and basic content warnings.
  • Work directly with other Front of House staff including House Managers and Box Office Associates to ensure a pleasant experience for guests.
  • Check identification to ensure customers are the legal age to purchase alcohol.
  • Take inventory to ensure bar and tables are well-stocked.
  • Adhere to all food safety and quality regulations.
  • Handle cash, credit, and debit card transactions, ensuring charges are accurate, return correct change to patrons, and balance the cash register and nightly tip out.
  • Maintain a clean bar and dining area by removing trash, cleaning tables, and washing glasses, utensils, and equipment.
  • Open and close bar in a timely and complete fashion.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • MUST BE 21 YEARS OF AGE
  • Have or obtain VABC Responsible Sellers and Servers: Virginia Program (RSVP) Certificate.
  • Availability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Positive, engaging personality and professional appearance.
  • Basic math and computer skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong task and time management abilities.
  • Eye for detail and understanding of drink mixing tools and techniques.

Usher

Signature Theatre, a Tony Award®-winning, non-profit professional theater, in Arlington, Virginia is seeking part-time Ushers to join our Front of House Team. Ushers are responsible for providing a high standard of guest service to achieve and maintain customer loyalty from both subscribers and single ticket buyers, maximize revenue for the Signature Shop, and ensure the safety of Patrons and Artists. Ushers report to the Front of House Operations Manager and House Manager on Duty. Ushers are expected to facilitate the best patron experience possible at mainstage Signature productions, cabarets, and other events throughout the year.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Meet and greet all patrons entering Signature’s Max or Ark Theatre, checking, or scanning for valid tickets.
  • Be personal and pro-active in aiding all guests with the highest level of customer service and hospitality.
  • Assist guests by providing accurate directions to seating sections within the theatres.
  • Receive and quickly act upon requests or complaints from patrons; refer serious problems to the House Manager on Duty.
  • Retain knowledge of the Signature Theatre’s history, staff, and emergency activity procedures.
  • Enforce Signatures policies, rules, and Equity regulations.
  • Aid the House Manager on duty to patrons in the event of an accident or injury.
  • In the event of an emergency, assist in evacuating Signature Theatre, while maintaining a calm, professional demeanor.
  • Perform additional functions and activities as directed by the House Manager on Duty or Front of House Operations Manager.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Other customer service helpful but not required. Training will be provided.
  • Have strong interpersonal skills and able to provide excellent customer service and hospitality.
  • Must be a team player who is able to work well in a fast-paced environment.
  • Available to work 20 hours per week.

Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time, walk long distances, and climb up/downstairs.
  • The employee is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or sit and must lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.

Teaching Artists

Signature Theatre’s Education Department is conducting an ongoing search for skilled part-time teaching artists for school partnerships, workshops and residencies.

Selected teaching artists will be kept in Signature Education’s teaching artist database and contacted when school partnerships require their specific talents in the classroom. Signature Education is looking for teaching artists with experience teaching acting, directing, voice, dance, playwrighting, technical theatre and theatrical design to middle school and high school students. The need for teaching artists is ongoing and this is a rolling application process.

Basic Duties / Requirements:

  • Teaching artists create, oversee and supervise workshops, residencies and lessons as a Signature representative at partnering schools and organizations. Signature Teaching Artists are expected to be supportive, respectful and encouraging toward all students and classroom teachers. While Signature Education will generally not write lesson plans for Teaching Artists, artists will collaborate with Signature representatives, students, school representatives to create lesson plans and materials
  • Teaching artists should know that they may teach anywhere within the DMV area and that they will be responsible for handling their own transportation to each school they’re assigned to. Should a workshop present itself that takes place online, teaching artists are requested to run the session with a strong connection to the internet.
  • In addition to teaching experience, experience working professionally in theatre is preferred.
  • Signature Theatre teaching artists work with diverse student populations and experience levels. Applicants with experience working with diverse populations, including but not limited to non-English, multilingual, neurodiverse, or disabled students are encouraged to apply.
