Casting Director/Artistic Associate

The Casting Director/Artistic Associate plays a pivotal role in bringing Signature Theatre's productions to life by scouting and recruiting exceptional talent. Serving as the key liaison between creative teams and actors (or their representation), this position ensures the casting process aligns with the artistic vision and standards of the Theatre.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Talent Scouting and Casting

  • Collaborate with directors, choreographers, and music directors to generate comprehensive casting lists for mainstage productions, workshops, readings, and cabarets.
  • Schedule and oversee Equity Principal Auditions (EPAs), Equity Chorus Calls (ECCs), and non-equity open calls in Washington, DC, and New York City.
  • Conduct show-specific initial auditions and callbacks, reviewing audition tapes as needed.
  • Partner with NYC casting directors to schedule auditions, arrange travel, prepare breakdowns/sides, and secure audition spaces.

Administrative Duties

  • Prepare, negotiate, and finalize actor agreements while maintaining strict adherence to budgets and union requirements (AEA and others).
  • Coordinate with the Associate General Manager to ensure contracts and actor details are processed before rehearsals begin.
  • Manage payment for audition consultants, including readers, accompanists, and NYC casting directors.
  • Maintain Signature Theatre's internal digital casting database to ensure up-to-date records.

Relationship Building

  • Build and foster relationships with emerging and established talent by attending regional productions and semi-professional performances in DC and NYC.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for actors during the offer and confirmation process.
  • Teach workshops for Signature Theatre’s education programs to nurture the next generation of talent.

Artistic Operations

  • Assist in season planning and artistic event coordination, working closely with the Artistic Director and Associate Artistic Director.
  • Support the Director of Artistic Development by evaluating and tracking script submissions.
  • Coordinate artist communications regarding repertoire and logistics for artistic events, including annual gala and community events.
  • Host talkbacks and facilitate artistic events as needed.
  • Actively contribute to Signature Theatre’s commitment to being an anti-racist organization through collaborative efforts across departments.

Other Duties

  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Artistic Director. 
     

DIRECT REPORTS AND OTHER REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

This role reports to Signature’s Artistic Director. The Casting Director works closely with the Artistic, Production Management, and General Management teams. The role is also expected to keep other departments including the Marketing and Production teams updated on where casting stands on specific productions. Also oversees the Executive Assistant in terms of assistance in casting needs.

LOCATION AND HOURS

This role is based on-site at Signature Theatre’s facilities in Arlington, VA, with occasional telework opportunities. 
Travel to New York City for casting calls and other talent-related events is required. 
The Theatre’s administrative hours are 10am-6pm. Evening and weekend availability is expected, depending on production schedules.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Exceptional interpersonal and collaboration skills, with a strong ability to communicate effectively.
  • Proven experience in theatre casting and leading casting calls, with a preference for familiarity with the DC theatre community and talent pool.
  • A keen eye for talent and a deep understanding of acting techniques and the casting process.
  • Expertise in negotiating contracts and understanding budgets.
  • Strong organizational skills with an ability to manage multiple details and deadlines.
  • Awareness of industry trends and emerging talent.

The salary range for this position is mid-to-high 50s (commensurate with experience). Deck Chief

Under the direction of the Technical Director, the Deck Chief leads Deck Hands in the successful running of the scenic and properties elements of all productions. The Deck Chief is also responsible for the safe and successful programming, operation, and maintenance of all automated scenic elements. During the run of each show, the Deck Chief reports to the Stage Manager. Signature produces about 6-8 full-scale company productions and several additional one-off stage productions annually. This is a full-time hourly position

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as run crew for productions as assigned by Production Manager.
  • Hire, maintain, and dismiss Deck Hands on all productions.
  • Lead Deck Hands and full-time staff Props Runner in the running of scenic and properties elements of all productions.
  • Perform and oversee maintenance done by run crew for all scenic and properties elements of a production. Coordinate more complex repairs with Technical Director.
  • Program and operate all automated scenery shifts, including assisting Director, Scenic Designer, and Technical Director in the composition of the cues.
  • Take a leadership position and assist the Technical Director in the assembly and installation of all automation systems.
  • With the Technical Director, take lead on the tuning of all automation systems, and ensure their safe and orderly operation and maintenance.
  • Assist the Stage Management team in updating and maintaining scenic run sheets.
  • Assist the Stage Manager in overseeing and executing security and safety procedures for the theatre facility during performances (i.e. fire alarm, power outages).
  • Assist with all technical/scenic needs for special events occurring at the theatre.
  • Perform additional labor in scene shop, at direction of the Technical Director, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

ASSIGNED MEETINGS AND REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The Deck Chief must attend all assigned production meetings and company-wide meetings. They may also attend Department Heads meetings, when available. This position reports directly to the Technical Director, with additional reporting to the Production Manager and Stage Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2+ years working in a professional theatrical backstage setting is preferred.
  • Experience managing run crew and carpentry teams is strongly preferred.
  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with rigging systems for automation and best practices.
  • Familiarity with Creative Conners automation systems is preferred.
  • Comfort driving an 18’ box truck is preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with Production colleagues to create a healthy, hard-working, team-oriented environment.

WORKING REQUIREMENTS

  • Employee must be able to lift 50 pounds unaided and in repetition, move around an office and shop, and frequently ascend/descend ladders or steps.
  • Will be frequently exposed to the following shop conditions among others: loud noises, working at heights, in confined spaces, and in adverse weather/temperatures.
  • This position often works nights and weekends, as is typical for a professional theatrical schedule.
  • Employee must maintain a safe and orderly working environment.
  • This position is based at Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA.

Staff Carpenter

Under the direction of the Lead Carpenter, the Staff Carpenter serves as a key member of the Production Staff within the Scenic Department. The Staff Carpenter works in a team of 3 full-time carpenters and union overhire to construct, assemble, and load/unload all scenic elements for company productions and events. The Staff Carpenter will also be responsible for leading teams of overhire in projects as directed by the Lead Carpenter. This is a full-time hourly position. Signature produces about 6-8 full-scale company productions and several additional one-off stage productions annually.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES

  • At the direction of the Lead Carpenter, Assistant Technical Director, and/or Technical Director, construct, assemble, load in, and load out scenery.
  • Lead small groups of union overhire on specific projects during build, load-in, and strike.
  • Maintain and demonstrate best practices for scenic construction.
  • Demonstrate sound leadership with a varying and diverse group of union overhire carpenters.
  • Keep the scene shop clean and orderly and assist the Deck Chief in keeping the stage house in a similar state.
  • Assist the Deck Chief in maintenance and upkeep of productions and their artistic and technical values.
  • Maintain and enforce best practices for safety standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Working hours are typically 7am-4pm, with some weeks prior to and including technical rehearsals for mainstage productions requiring 50- to 60-hour work weeks, including nights and weekends.

Usher

Signature Theatre, a Tony Award®-winning, non-profit professional theater, in Arlington, Virginia is seeking part-time Ushers to join our Front of House Team. Ushers are responsible for providing a high standard of guest service to achieve and maintain customer loyalty from both subscribers and single ticket buyers, maximize revenue for the Signature Shop, and ensure the safety of Patrons and Artists. Ushers report to the Front of House Operations Manager and House Manager on Duty. Ushers are expected to facilitate the best patron experience possible at mainstage Signature productions, cabarets, and other events throughout the year.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Meet and greet all patrons entering Signature’s Max or Ark Theatre, checking, or scanning for valid tickets.
  • Be personal and pro-active in aiding all guests with the highest level of customer service and hospitality.
  • Assist guests by providing accurate directions to seating sections within the theatres.
  • Receive and quickly act upon requests or complaints from patrons; refer serious problems to the House Manager on Duty.
  • Retain knowledge of the Signature Theatre’s history, staff, and emergency activity procedures.
  • Enforce Signatures policies, rules, and Equity regulations.
  • Aid the House Manager on duty to patrons in the event of an accident or injury.
  • In the event of an emergency, assist in evacuating Signature Theatre, while maintaining a calm, professional demeanor.
  • Perform additional functions and activities as directed by the House Manager on Duty or Front of House Operations Manager.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Other customer service helpful but not required. Training will be provided.
  • Have strong interpersonal skills and able to provide excellent customer service and hospitality.
  • Must be a team player who is able to work well in a fast-paced environment.
  • Available to work 20 hours per week.

Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time, walk long distances, and climb up/downstairs.

Teaching Artists

Signature Theatre’s Education Department is conducting an ongoing search for skilled part-time teaching artists for school partnerships, workshops and residencies.

Selected teaching artists will be kept in Signature Education’s teaching artist database and contacted when school partnerships require their specific talents in the classroom. Signature Education is looking for teaching artists with experience teaching acting, directing, voice, dance, playwrighting, technical theatre and theatrical design to middle school and high school students. The need for teaching artists is ongoing and this is a rolling application process.

Basic Duties / Requirements:

  • Teaching artists create, oversee and supervise workshops, residencies and lessons as a Signature representative at partnering schools and organizations. Signature Teaching Artists are expected to be supportive, respectful and encouraging toward all students and classroom teachers. While Signature Education will generally not write lesson plans for Teaching Artists, artists will collaborate with Signature representatives, students, school representatives to create lesson plans and materials
  • Teaching artists should know that they may teach anywhere within the DMV area and that they will be responsible for handling their own transportation to each school they’re assigned to. Should a workshop present itself that takes place online, teaching artists are requested to run the session with a strong connection to the internet.
  • In addition to teaching experience, experience working professionally in theatre is preferred.
  • Signature Theatre teaching artists work with diverse student populations and experience levels. Applicants with experience working with diverse populations, including but not limited to non-English, multilingual, neurodiverse, or disabled students are encouraged to apply.

Food Expeditor and Dishwasher

Signature Theatre, a Tony Award®-winning, non-profit professional theater, in Arlington, Virginia seeks a part-time Food Expeditor and Dishwasher, to assist a busy kitchen at Ali’s Bar, located inside Signature Theatre.  

The Food Expeditor and Dishwasher will be responsible for maintaining the flow of orders from the bar to the kitchen to the diners, ensuring orders are completed quickly and correctly, assisting with the finishing touches on dishes, conducting quality control on each dish, and delivering food to either bartender or to diners at their tables. This position will also be responsible for busing and sanitizing dining tables, collecting utensils, and properly cleaning and restocking supplies. This is a part-time hourly non-exempt position that reports to Ali’s Bar Food and Beverage Manager. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Delivering food to customers' tables.
  • Assist cook with basic prep and cooking tasks during service.
  • Informing the bartenders when certain dishes or ingredients have run out and passing food requests from the bartenders to the kitchen.
  • Ensuring that all orders are completed on time and with the correct priority.
  • Inspecting the cleanliness, presentation, and temperature of completed dishes.
  • Performing the finishing touches to completed dishes, such as adding garnishes and removing smudges.
  • Keeping the cooking, storage, and prep areas clean, neat, and well-stocked.
  • Ensuring all staff adheres to health and safety standards.
  • Collecting and cleaning used dining ware from the dining area, bar and kitchen. Cleaning and sanitizing tables and surfaces.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Availability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.  
  • Basic math and computer skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.  
  • Strong task and time management abilities.  
  • Eye for detail and understanding of food service health and safety.  
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, etc. for extended periods, and lift up to 50 lbs.  
  • Experience in POS system Toast a plus.  
  • Previous experience in Bar and Restaurant a plus.
